Supporting the sustainable, responsible development of short-term let tourism.
About us
The UK Short Term Accommodation Association (STAA) was founded in March 2017 with a clear purpose in mind: ensuring greater cooperation to tackle common industry challenges and seizing shared opportunities in this growing sector. To this end, we are seeking to work with all stakeholders towards a stable and supportive regulatory environment that promotes the UK as a global leader in the provision of short-term accommodation.

The budget isn’t all bad for tourism but there is little to cheer. Tourism supports thousands of jobs across the country, in our cities and providing investment in our rural and coastal communities. The thousands of small businesses in Tourism were also hit harder than any other sector by the pandemic and are still recovering. We are disappointed that the help we need wasn’t given and issues such as FHL abolition and tax free tourism shopping weren’t addressed. STAA will keep fighting for our members and the wider tourism sector. We urge government to consider the specific needs of short-term rental tourism, from individual cottage owners to larger platforms. Our sector plays a vital role in spreading the benefits of tourism, driving local economies, creating jobs, and offering travellers more choice. We look forward to working together with policymakers to ensure that any new regulations or tax adjustments strike a balance between encouraging growth and maintaining community interests. Andrew Fenner, CEO of the STAA, adds: “I understand the pressures the government is facing, but I also see first-hand the pressures our members are under. Our sector supports thousands of jobs across the UK, from rural communities to city centres, and plays a crucial role in the wider tourism industry. We encourage the government to work with us to create policies that protect these jobs and foster a sustainable environment for growth. Anna Calder Urquhart Morris from STAA member, Adore Scotland/The Edinburgh Address said “It’s been a challenging year for self-catering businesses, especially in Scotland, where licensing complexities—particularly the overlap with planning—have led to a worrying decline in business. Anna added,”…I’m extremely pleased to see more than £5 billion investment in housing as building houses is the only way to get out of any housing crisis. Not scapegoating self catering…” The STAA knows that by working together with the governments across the UK we can ensure that short-term rental tourism continues to benefit both communities and the economy. #Sustainable #Responsible #Tourism Labour Business, SME4Labour, Chris Webb MP, ShortTermRentalz, Holiday Cottage Handbook, Chris Webb MP, Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Paul McLennan, Tourism Alliance, Ben Edgar-Spier, Carl Thomson, Charlie Reith, Fiona MacConnacher, The Tourism Society, World Travel & Tourism Council, Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

Great to hear Andrew Fenner’s take on the FHL issue. Our main hope is the government takes stock of this proposal and understands it is very likely to adversely affect coastal and rural economies which rely heavily on the holiday let properties managed by our businesses.
Just pause. That’s the message to Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves in relation to plans to abolish the furnished holiday lettings (FHL) tax regime. Andrew Fenner, CEO, Short Term Accommodation Association, is playing a leading role in lobbying the government after it announced it was sticking with spring budget plans to change the way holiday lets are taxed in the UK. But without clear data from the sector, including the actual number of rentals, Fenner is adamant the government should hold fire on new policy until it has the facts at hand. STR tourism in Scotland - the STAA is playing a leading role to build for the future. The implementation of short-term rental (STR) legislation in Scotland has been fraught, to say the least. Businesses have suffered, families are paying more for their holidays and the reputation of Scottish tourism has taken a hit. But things are changing. The STAA has worked with The Scottish Government and Housing Minister Paul McLennan and his team for months. We are now starting to see changes take shape. As anyone in Scottish tourism knows, there is a long way to go, but we are making real progress towards shaping regulations that balance the needs of both communities and tourism businesses. This experience is vital as we look to England and Wales, where we want to work closely with the Housing Minister in England to avoid similar pitfalls. The STAA is using its unique experience of dealing across the UK to guide its work in England. Our policy team are working hard in Scotland and are using the knowledge gained to help in England. Our CEO Andy Fenner says in The Telegraph”… let’s avoid a Scotland situation in England.” Much of the problem has stemmed from the differences in how councils were choosing to implement the policy, he adds. “The example in Scotland has shown how bad that is for business. We need a universal scheme across the UK.” Working together with government from the outset is the key to ensuring a strong future for short-term let tourism across the UK. The STAA is doing just that, working for our communities, our businesses and the people who work in them. #Sustainable #Responsible #Tourism #STAA #ShortTermLets #Tourism #HousingPolicy #Scotland #England #Wales #WorkingTogether Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Carl Thomson, Charlie Reith, Fiona MacConnacher, Ben Edgar-Spier, Tourism Alliance, Chris Webb MP, VisitScotland, The Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA) , Anna Calder Urquhart Morris, Pia D., FSB Scotland, The CLA, NFU SCOTLAND https://lnkd.in/e8TfPDbb
