National battery manufacturing development facility supporting the scale-up of UK battery technology. 🔋⚡
About us
The UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) is a pioneering concept in the race to develop battery technology for the transition to a greener future. 🔋🌍 What we do: Our unique facility provides the missing link between battery technology, which has proved promising at laboratory or prototype scale, and successful mass production. Based in Coventry, our publicly-funded battery product development facility welcomes manufacturers, entrepreneurs, researchers and educators, and can be accessed by any organisation with existing or new battery technology – if that technology will bring green jobs and prosperity to the UK. UKBIC is a key part of the Faraday Battery Challenge (FBC), a Government programme to fast track the development of cost-effective, high-performance, durable, safe, low-weight and recyclable batteries. Funding: In addition to funding from the Faraday Battery Challenge through UK Research and Innovation and the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, we are also part-funded through the West Midlands Combined Authority. The project has been delivered through a consortium of Coventry City Council, Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership and WMG, at the University of Warwick. UKBIC was created in 2018 following a competition led by the Advanced Propulsion Centre with support from Innovate UK. UKBIC played host to a delegation from C&W Chamber of Commerce last week, with Matthew Cutler obliging with a guided tour of the facility. We were able to show off what we do, while also answering questions. Always nice to have an engaged group taking a real interest in what we have to offer the region and the country.

Every day's a school day!...and I had 2 VERY intensive school days studying at The UKBIC Monday/Tuesday. INTRODUCTION TO BATTERY MANUFACTURING 🔋 So how was it? Having left formal education back in 1976 I travelled up to Coventry with some trepidation to be honest. For sure I've been 'homeschooling' myself a bit over the 47 intervening years...so, armed with my 4 CSE's (English, Maths, Statistics & Geography) and my time at The University Life, I joined a dozen or so others - keen on discovering just what the business of batteries was all about! 🤔 Our teachers Jonty Deeley-Williamson & Simon Hill did a great job! Knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and engaging...and for sure I discovered more about chemistry and science in the first few modules on day 1 then I had in 5 years at Deal Secondary Modern (mostly because I was keener back in the day on studying Marc Bolan's T Rex lyrics than anything Dmitri Mendeleev was banging on about) There were many moments during the course when I whispered 'OH I get it now'...and a few times where I simply shouted that out. (there's always one in every class - and it's ALWAYS me!) Is the course for YOU? YES for sure if you're doing anything around energy and mobility in particular right now, but given the significance of energy storage in so many aspects of modern life - just invest your time and the fee in equipping yourself with critical baseload knowledge of this ubiquitous device - and charge up your SOK (State of Knowledge) from 🪫 to 🔋. Here's a 6 minute video summary of the 2 days... Thanks to Faye Holloway for filming 👏 PS - I charged my car for free whilst there on both days! 🕺 #battery #gigfactory #electricvehicles #chemistry

wasp.milky.treat - that's where I'll find myself for a couple of days next week! I'll be attending the two-day introduction to battery manufacturing course at The UKBIC which is open to technicians, managers, researchers, investors, or anyone interested in gaining practical knowledge of the growing battery sector. 'Delegates will be able to listen to specialists introduce the fundamentals of the battery manufacturing process, hear about the materials required, and the technologies available. They will also be given the chance to tour the state-of-the-art facility and see the giga scale battery manufacturing equipment used in the facility' UKBIC is a key part of the Faraday Battery Challenge (FBC), a Government programme to fast track the development of cost-effective, high-performance, durable, safe, low-weight and recyclable batteries. In addition to funding from the Faraday Battery Challenge, part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, at UK Research and Innovation, UKBIC is also part-funded through the West Midlands Combined Authority. The project has been delivered through a consortium of Coventry City Council, Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership and WMG, University of Warwick. UKBIC was created in 2018 following a competition led by the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK with support from Innovate UK. I'll be following in the footsteps of some well know industry players including Quentin Willson, Ben Kilbey amongst others - so an opportunity to compare notes in due course!🔋 I've filmed interviews and looked around the facility a few times since it opened a few years ago....I'll put links in the comments section below! in the meantime, after a wonderful weekend celebrating with family and friends at the wedding of son Nathaniel Atkins to the beautiful Lucy Seager...its time for an early night to recover from the festivities - and prepare for the classroom! #batteries #batterytechnology #gigafactory #electricvehicles

It was a great pleasure to welcome Sir Stan Whittingham, Chemistry Nobel Laureate and Professor and Distinguished Director of NECCES and Battery-NY at Binghamton University (SUNY) to the UKBIC stand during day one of The Battery Show North America. One of the topics he discussed during his visit to the stand was market uncertainty. He commented on the importance and need to continue at pace for battery technology innovation. Even in a slow market, the pursuit of better, more efficient batteries is crucial for advancing and driving technological progress for a better more sustainable future. For more than three decades, Sir Stan - who visited UKBIC last year - has been a pioneer in the development of lithium-ion batteries, for which he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019. He holds the original patent on the use of intercalation chemistry in high-power density, highly reversible lithium batteries. Come and visit the UKBIC team on the UK Government Pavilion stand (#3222)! 🔋⚡ #BatteryShow #TheBatteryShow #BatteryShowUSA #Batteries #BatteryManufacturing #BatteryTechnology | Naseer Ahmed | Andrew Britton
