This British Science Week, our very own Dylan Watmough is reflecting on how the theme "Change and Adapt" applies to nuclear science and public engagement. “Changing and adapting isn’t just an important part of our careers. It’s something that follows us through life, starting from a young age. It stems from the natural curiosity that children and young people have about the world," writes Dylan in his thoughtful blog on connecting with younger generations about nuclear energy's role in addressing climate change. Dylan is at the forefront of our efforts to make nuclear science accessible and works with our outreach team to take our message to the public. His work has shown that meaningful conversations can change perceptions. As Dylan notes, "even brief conversations can shift opinions from opposition to support" when we adapt our approach to address specific concerns. Read Dylan's full blog to discover how UKNNL is working to bridge the knowledge gap and inspire the next generation of nuclear scientists. #UKNNLTogetherWeCan #BritishScienceWeek #NuclearScience #NetZero #STEM #Outreach #BSW25

We're incredibly proud that Finley Underhill, a graduate nuclear scientist from our reactor modelling team, represented UKNNL at the prestigious STEM for Britain competition earlier this week, after being selected as a finalist in the top 30 out of 300 entries! STEM for Britain is a major scientific poster competition held at the Houses of Parliament, bringing together early-career researchers and MPs to showcase and discuss cutting-edge UK research work. Finley presented his innovative work on advanced reactor technology to MPs at the House of Commons - technology that's critical for the UK's decarbonisation strategy and delivering our net zero and energy security ambitions. At UKNNL, nurturing the next generation of nuclear talent is one of our key priorities. Finley's achievement highlights the exceptional skills being developed within our early careers programme, and demonstrates the wide breadth of talent we're fostering for the future of nuclear science. Check out the video to hear what our Chief Science and Technology Officer, Gareth Headdock, had to say about this tremendous achievement. 👇 #STEM #NuclearEnergy #EarlyCareers #Innovation #NetZero #UKNNL #STEMforBritain

🔬 This British Science Week, we're celebrating the theme of 'change and adapt' by sharing our educational resources for young minds! Our videos "A Kid's Guide to Energy Systems" and "Nuclear Energy - A Kid's Guide" help explain how energy powers our homes and how nuclear energy helps us adapt to being more environmentally friendly. At UKNNL, we believe in inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers who will lead the innovations of tomorrow. These accessible guides break down complex concepts into fun, engaging content that helps young people understand the energy systems shaping their future. Watch, share, and help us spark scientific curiosity this British Science Week! This British Science Week, we're showcasing how innovation drives our ability to change and adapt to future energy challenges. Pioneering coated particle fuel technology represents a fundamental shift in nuclear energy: particles the size of poppy seeds that can power multiple kettles, with innovative safety features that make it one of the most robust nuclear fuels ever developed. At UKNNL, we're not just changing technology - we're adapting the entire approach to clean energy production, helping the UK lead the global transition to net zero. 🔬 Proud to celebrate British Science Week! At UKNNL, we're passionate about supporting this year's themes of education and 'change and adapt'. To do that, we love to bring science directly to you. One example is last year’s Furness Education and Skills Partnership (FESP) UlverSTEM event, bringing interactive STEM experiences to 6-16 year olds. Our team engaged with over 1,000 young minds and our popular experiments included: 🤖 Radiation Robots - A crowd favourite! 🧤 Glovebox Operations - Teaching safe handling 🔬 Contamination Control - Real-world applications 🌡️ Hot Hands - Competitive family fun One young scientist declared our glovebox experiment “the best experiment ever!” – That’s exactly the enthusiasm we aim to inspire in the next generation. #UKNNLTogetherWeCan #BritishScienceWeek #BSW25 #STEM #ScienceEducation #UKScience #Innovation #NuclearScience

British Science Week 2025 celebrates how science helps us 'change and adapt'. This groundbreaking project exemplifies both. From powering homes to healing bodies: We are working with Medicines Discovery Catapult to adapt nuclear waste into pioneering cancer treatments. This innovative transformation showcases British science at its finest, converting spent nuclear materials into new medical therapies. This project demonstrates how we can adapt nuclear waste for healthcare, change cancer treatment approaches and transform patient outcomes. This is British innovation driving positive change for our future. #UKNNLTogetherWeCan #BSW25 #NuclearMedicine #Innovation #SustainableScience Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/ecDrFnHa

This International Women's Day, as part of British Science Week, we're proud to highlight our commitment to engaging women and girls in science 🔬👩🔬 Four of our amazing colleagues – Jo Cubbit, Lisa Ramsden, Emma K. and Colette Handley – are involved in the Girls Out Loud Big Sister Mentoring programme, supporting young girls to pursue STEM subjects and unleash their potential. The programme targets girls who might otherwise become 'invisible' in the classroom. With guidance and role models from UKNNL, these young women are finding their voice and discovering new possibilities in science. As Colette says: "It's so important to get young people, particularly girls, engaged in STEM early on in life so a whole new world of opportunities is open to them from the very start. That's why I'm really proud to be part of the Big Sisters programme." At UKNNL, we're pushing the boundaries of nuclear innovation while championing the next generation of women in science. Here's to celebrating women in STEM today and every day! #UKNNLTogetherWeCan #InternationalWomensDay #BritishScienceWeek #WomenInSTEM #WomenInNuclear #GirlsOutLoud #BigSisterProgramme #BSW25
