We’re excited to share that we've been awarded a generous grant from the Ulverscroft Foundation to further develop our Reading Friends programme for individuals who are blind and partially sighted. Building on the success of our 2023-2024 pilot, we’re looking forward to expanding our reach and impact over the next two years, with the aim of fostering even more social connections and reducing isolation through reading. A huge thank you to the Ulverscroft Foundation for making this possible and to our partners, including Share the Vision, for their continued support. Find out more: https://bit.ly/3MG55LD

    Managing Director, Ulverscroft Group Ltd.

“I've traveled the world twice over, Met the famous; saints and sinners, Poets and artists, kings and queens, Old stars and hopeful beginners, I've been where no-one's been before, Learned secrets from writers and cooks All with one library ticket To the wonderful world of books. Janice James” Always remember the above appearing at one time in every large print book published by Ulverscroft. Why would we ever fail to value free access to books regardless of format, and let’s recognise that the library system offers the most simplest form of sustainability with books being loaned repeatedly. We should never forget all that libraries offer and their impact on lives.

We're incredibly proud that our librarian Jackie Burgess has achieved national recognition for her work supporting blind and visually impaired people in Guernsey. Jackie was named first runner up in the Vision & Print Impaired People’s category at the Libraries Connected Awards – otherwise known as the ‘library Oscars’. She’s been recognised for setting up our Stories on USB service, which supplies blind and visually impaired people with free audiobooks. These can be listened to on specially designed USB players, available from the Guernsey Blind Association. Jackie selects stories to match each person’s tastes, downloads them from the Library’s digital collection onto USB sticks, and mails these out for free courtesy of Guernsey Post Ltd. In being named runner up, Jackie won recognition amongst fellow professionals from all over the country, including library services in London, Manchester, and the Midlands. Yesterday she travelled to Warwickshire to collect her prize at the Libraries Connected annual seminar. And she wasn’t the only member of the Guille-Allès team to be shortlisted at this year’s Awards - our Library Assistant Beth Brown was also nominated for establishing the Lit with Liberate book group for the island’s LGBTQ+ community. It's amazing to see our team continuing to achieve national recognition for their work. Jackie’s success is richly deserved – Stories on USB is a real lifeline for many blind and visually impaired people, allowing them to continue their love of reading even as they come to terms with sight loss. Congratulations, Jackie!

According to Statista, Audiobooks market revenue is expected to reach US$7.93bn in 2024. That's a huge chunk of the publishing industry, and I had the pleasure of learning more about it; thanks to a fantastic guest lecture by Alice Corning and Ceri Jones. Their session offered a fascinating glimpse into the world of audio publishing, with insights into: The workings of audiobook production: From casting voice actors to sound design, there's a lot that goes into making a captivating audiobook experience. The roles of Publishing Assistants and Rights Executives: I gained knowledge about the crucial work they do in securing licenses, managing budgets, and ensuring audiobooks reach the right audience. The selection process for audiobooks: It's not just about popular titles! Publishers consider factors like genre, narrator suitability, and overall market potential. The key connections in audio publishing: Understanding the relationships between publishers, narrators, studios, and distributors is essential for anyone interested in this growing field. The insights were truly eye-opening, and I'm excited to see how the world of audiobooks continues to evolve. The freebies were a cherry on top along with such an amazing session! #girlwhowrites #audiobooks #publishing #audiopublishing
