As employers, it’s essential to understand the challenges that young talent face - especially those from underrepresented backgrounds - to support their well-being and create an environment where they can thrive. 📊 In our latest law report, 81% of respondents identified as from underrepresented groups, and 98% are actively pursuing legal roles. Yet many struggle with stress during the application process. Here’s how employers can provide some impactful support: ➡️ Application Masterclasses can break down the intimidating recruitment process and give candidates confidence. These sessions offer practical tips for assessment centres, which many applicants feel unprepared for. Knowing what to expect goes a long way in easing stress. ➡️ For students from low-income backgrounds, costs related to travel, technology, or study resources can be barriers. Offering a bit of financial assistance helps level the playing field, making your organisation accessible to a wider range of talent. ➡️ Offering networking opportunities with industry mentors can make all the difference. ⚖️ Our latest law survey report emphasises the importance of DEI in the legal profession, highlighting both the progress made and the challenges that remain. Key findings include: 🧲 76% of respondents believe DEI policies are essential for attracting and retaining talent, especially among Gen Z. 👥 62% recognise the importance of visible representation in the workplace. 🔍 Concerns around the lack of diversity and inclusion remain, with some expressing, “I feel as if I do not belong here,” underscoring the need for continued efforts in this space. At Uptree, we encourage our Employers to actively promote their DEI policies at events. 🚀 Last week, we took some time to reflect on the impact of our events from the past academic year, and the results have been incredible! Here’s what students had to say: ✨ 97.6% of respondents said our events boosted their confidence when speaking to professionals – a crucial skill for career success. 💼 86.17% of students want to attend more events with the same employers they met through Uptree. 🔎 99.39% of students found our events useful for learning about careers in the industry. 🎯 Most excitingly, the number of students planning to apply for opportunities with our Employers have more than doubled, rising from 35.89% to 73.71% – a massive 105.38% increase! These results confirm that we’re on the right track, and we’re committed to continuing our mission of making opportunities more accessible for all students. 🎉 Last Friday, we were excited to host FuturesUP, our flagship multi-industry networking event at DLA Piper's offices in London. 👋 We welcomed 86 Uptree students along with some of our fantastic Employers from the law and finance industries. This event provided students with a unique opportunity to explore various career pathways and learn about the transferable skills that connect these sectors. Here’s a look at what the day featured: ✨ Inspiring speakers: Employers shared their personal journeys and insights into law and finance, offering real-world advice and motivation. 💪 Resilience workshop: An interactive session that empowered students to develop crucial skills for overcoming challenges and building confidence in their career paths. ⚡ Speed networking: A fast-paced session where students connected with multiple industry professionals, gaining insights and building valuable contacts. 🎤 Apprenticeship panel: Current apprentices shared their experiences, answered student questions, and provided advice for navigating the apprenticeship route. 🤝 Employer stalls: Students had the opportunity to engage directly with top firms, ask questions, and discover exciting opportunities. 🎉 At Uptree, we continually celebrate the successes of our One+1 Social Mobility Placement Programme in partnership with KPMG. For over a decade, KPMG has been committed to enhancing social mobility and has established itself as a leading employer in this space. 👥 The One+1 Social Mobility Programme offers a unique opportunity for students who lack personal connections to KPMG. Each time KPMG hosts a contact from one of its employees, they provide a work placement to another deserving student. 🤝 This programme enables students to gain first-hand experience and insight into what it’s truly like to work for one of the world’s leading professional services firms. Participants enjoy work shadowing opportunities ranging from 1 to 5 days at various KPMG office locations and across different business areas. 💬 One Uptree student shared their experience: “What I enjoyed most about my placement was the chance to speak directly with a diverse group of KPMG employees [...] I gained valuable insights into their journeys to KPMG and formed lasting connections, giving me a deeper understanding of KPMG’s various departments and their amazing work environment.” 🚀 From September 2023 to August 2024, 123 students from Uptree successfully completed their placements across the UK, opening doors to future opportunities. 🌟 We’re excited to continue this programme for another year, connecting young people with KPMG Employer contacts across the UK. Our recent Law Survey Report highlights the key obstacles they face, featuring insights and perspectives directly from students: 📌 65% of students reported that the application process and assessment centres are the most challenging stages. 📌 Many young people feel uncertain about what to expect at assessment centres, often struggling in high-pressure environments despite demonstrating strong written application skills. 📌 Hands-on training, such as upskilling workshops or skills-based sessions, can significantly enhance students' confidence and improve their chances of success. 📝 In light of these findings, it is crucial to make assessments approachable and accessible. 🚀 The first week of October got off to a flying start here at Uptree! 🤝 We welcomed 84 students to Linklaters and UBS across 2 days of incredible Work Experience, where students got first-hand insights into the world of law and finance. 🔍We heard from experts in their fields, learnt more about some amazing apprenticeship opportunities, and got stuck in with industry-related tasks!
