Can you stream Four IP CCTV cameras reliabily with less than 90kbps of bandwidth? If you mess with remote video you should read this: I've been making connectivity reliable for nearly 20 years, and while it’s been fun connecting people, places, and things in challenging environments, I’ve always been drawn to the power and potential of low-latency video streaming. Many of my first bonded cellular installs were for VoIP and CCTV with alarm companies. Later, I worked on projects connecting properties, vehicles, events, and even drones. In every case, video was one of the most important applications. The most challenging project I’ve tackled so far was the Mayflower Autonomous Ship. The mission? Streaming video from 10 IP cameras onboard using just 200kbps of shared upload bandwidth via MEO satellite. The traditional approach—pulling main streams and substreams from each camera across the WAN—was unworkable, as it easily overloaded the available bandwidth. Even using local recording systems lacked the necessary bandwidth control for remote viewing. That’s when I discovered Videosoft Global , and they revolutionized my approach to remote low-latency video streaming. Their solution revolves around the VS Gateway, which can be deployed as software or hardware. The gateway connects cameras and other devices, recording raw video locally, encoding the streams, and transmitting them to the cloud or a centralized server (the Control Center Service). What makes this different? No matter how many viewers, the VS Gateway sends a single stream to the central service, which handles the distribution to multiple devices. Plus, the real magic: the ability to change video stream encoding in real time—switching between low-resolution and high-quality feeds as needed. Historic footage? No problem. The VS Gateway can asynchronously retrieve high-resolution video on demand. And all of this happens over a single, encrypted UDP port. I’ll be diving deeper into Videosoft soon, but here’s a quick example: I was on a train recently, streaming 4 IP cameras from my house at less than 90kbps. Mission complete! Appreciation to everyone that we had a chance to engage with at the Association of the United States Army - AUSA in Washington last week, bringing together individuals to work towards a stronger national defence and honour those who've served in the pursuit of the nation's security.
