🌟 It's National Care Leavers Week! 🌟 This week, we celebrate the resilience, achievements, and incredible journeys of young people leaving the care system. National Care Leavers Week is a chance for us all to recognise their unique experiences and the challenges they often face on their path to independence. For many young people, leaving home is an exciting milestone often supported by family and community. However, for care leavers, this journey is often more complex and can come with unique barriers. Care leavers are young people, typically aged 18-25, who have spent time in foster care, residential care, or under local authority care and are now moving towards independence. They show remarkable determination in navigating education, employment, housing, and building positive relationships. By celebrating their successes and sharing their stories, we help to break down stereotypes and bring attention to the support they deserve. At Wakefield Council, we’re committed to empowering care leavers to thrive and reach their full potential. This week is a time to listen, support, and honor the accomplishments of care leavers who are making a difference every day. Join us in celebrating #NationalCareLeaversWeek as they move beyond care. 💙 #CareLeaversWeek #CelebratingCareLeavers #BeyondCare #ProudToSupport

Our Rough Sleeper Delivery Board came together this week at Community Awareness Programme (CAP). It was fantastic as always to see so many of our partners join us. We shared our joint successes, discussed challenges and any emerging developments across the district. As we head into the winter months, these meetings are critical to our partnership. Working together helps us to understand the issues facing our residents and the services that support them. We can't wait to see all our partners again for the Homelessness forum in November, will you be joining us? #HousingNeeds #Partnership #LocalAuthority #Homelessness #RoughSleepers

🌟 Last night our Children's Social Care Team celebrated a special event with our young people leaving care. 🌟 We're kicking off National Care Leavers Week 2024 slightly early (it officially starts on Monday 28 October) with our Achievement Evening. We had the privilege of coming together to honor the incredible achievements of young people in our community. Awards were handed out to young people to celebrate them using their voice to inspire change, for their academic achievements, living independantly and succeeding in the world of work. 🌟 It was a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination these young people bring to every aspect of their lives. Our team felt incredibly proud to celebrate alongside them and recognise their personal journeys. To every care leaver and colleague who attended, thank you for inspiring us all! Here’s to more successes and continued support as you reach your goals. #BeyondCare #AchievementEvening #CelebratingCareLeavers #Wakefield

Wakefield is proud to be a recognised UNESCO Global Learning City. This means we get to share best practice and successful outcomes with cities all over the world. This month we are celebrating creative learning. Could your little one be the next Pablo Picasso or Vivienne Westwood? Bring them along to one of our FREE half-term Learning for Life events, where they will be able to design their own t-shirt. Introduce them to the world of chemistry with one of our FREE soap making workshops and awaken their interest in science. Suitable for children aged 5-12 years, must be accompanied by an adult.
