Last week Ofwat launched the #innovation fund for #AMP8. With its doubling of investment there are more opportunities to innovators to test their solutions than ever before. But which pots should innovators being paying close attention to? Here's our quick guide on how we expect the funding to be deployed: 1. Discovery Fund: two editions are planned AMP8 (2025 to 2030). Finalists in AMP7 won £50k and up to £450k for the top 10 projects. It is aimed at earlier stage innovations and doesn't need a water company to lead the entry - but you do get mentored by a company if you are selected. Last time there were almost 250 entries, and it is likely to be competitive again. 2. Waterbreakthrough Fund: The flagship annual competition, with investment from £150k for the Catalyst and fund and up to £10m for the Transform. These projects have to have a water company as a lead sponsor. Typically (but not always) the funding has been allocated to projects to complete a full scale test of trial solutions. Based on the AMP7 projects it takes about a year to get the funding released from the start of the entry period (maybe it will improve? - please!!) 3. New for AMP8 is the annual Water Efficiency Lab which will have approximately £5m of funding for each round. We expect there to be defined challenge statements to help target entries, but details are still TBC. 4. Implementation and Collaborative Challenge Funds are aimed directly at water companies and unlikely to directly relevant to innovators (but lots still to work out on these so could change). As we posted yesterday there is also the MOSL Market Improvement Fund aimed the commercial, non-household market. Spring have their accelerator programme, now on its fifth iteration. There is also Innovate UK funding - but usually tangentially water related. #Innovation #Funding Opportunity The MOSL Market Improvement Fund (MIF) fourth round will be opening for entries on 17th February. The fund aims to support innovations that will benefit the non-household market and its customers. In the last round they distributed £870k to eight applicants from a pool of 15 entrants - so good relatively good odds. Two of our members Wizso and Infersens were successful in getting funding. They are looking for truly innovative projects that will enhance the market functioning, and benefit non-household customers (but not giving a competitive advantage to a trading party). The #AMP8 Ofwat #Innovation Fund was launched yesterday. It confirmed: * That there will be increased funding for innovation, doubling to £400m * There will be new funding streams, of interest to founders and new entrants such as the Water Efficiency Lab and two editions of the Water Discovery Fund. *There will be a value for money evaluation carried out on previous and new projects. * The fund will continue to be managed by Challenge Works (Nesta), Arup and Isle Utilities. We are excited to see the expanded competition and look forward to seeing how it evolves over the AMP. Hopefully the value for money evaluation will spur more projects to be scaled and adopted.
