Want to control your smart water system locally? No problem. 👍 We’ve long believed that our products should integrate seamlessly into any home automation platform, and today, we’ve made that a reality with the release of three new features for our flagship product, Watergate Sonic. Watergate Local API The free Watergate Local API, allows direct control of Sonic using your preferred smart home or building management system. It enables users to create bespoke automations or routines and control Sonic locally. The API ensures seamless compatibility with a wide range of platforms, including Home Assistant, Samsung SmartThings, Crestron Electronics and Control4, among others. Voice activation with new Alexa integration We’ve also introduced a new Alexa Skill, allowing users to control their Sonic device with their voice – for example, shutting off your water. Once you have enabled the skill on your Alexa app, or directly on the Skill page, you can control Sonic by saying ‘Alexa, open Sonic’ to your Alexa smart device. Seamless Home Assistant Integration Watergate Sonic also now natively integrates with Home Assistant, an open-source local hub celebrated for its ever-growing community and continuous feature enhancements. This means users can use their water system effortlessly within the Home Assistant platform—from monitoring usage to automating leak prevention, Sonic is now an integral part of your smart home setup, making water management smarter and easier. Watergate has developed the integration and will support it so that everyone has access to the best-in-class integration. Pharrell Williams is not the only ticket in town at Web Summit Lisbon next month 😉 We're super-excited (or possibly, 'HAPPY'?!) to hear that Watergate founder & CEO Krystian Zajac has been selected to compete in PITCH, Web Summit’s startup competition that brings together the world’s leading 105 early-stage startups to battle it out on stage. Looking forward to sharing how we’re leading the way in sustainable water 💦 technology, and seeing how far we can go in the competition 🤞 👊 . #WaterEfficiency #SaveWater #TechForGood #WebSummit

When will we learn? Demand for water in the UK is set to outstrip supply within ten years according to some great reporting from the Telegraph today. 👀 And the Eastern Dally Press gives a fascinating insight into how this is already impacting businesses in water-stressed Suffolk. Those British businesses are effectively experiencing water ‘rationing’ TODAY. 😩 All this whilst more than 3bn litres of water gets tipped down the drain every day in England and Wales due to leaks. 💧 Oh, and Anglian Water (serving those Suffolk businesses) is marked as ‘lagging behind’ and missing its leakage targets in Ofwat’s latest report. 😣 This is all happening on the day a new UN report warns current measures give us zero chance of limiting global warming temperature increases to the 1.5 degrees Celsius target agreed at Paris 2015. Water shortages are a solvable problem. The technology is there to do it. We just need to take action now - government, the water companies, businesses and us as individuals all have a role to play. Can we learn from a failure to act quickly enough on global warming? Let’s end the era of #DumbWater.

Heard of Earth Hour? It’s the annual event where millions of people switch off their lights for 60 minutes to raise awareness of the climate emergency. Well, the water-saving champions over at Waterwise are launching #WaterNightUK on Thursday 24 October. 👏👏 Expect to see buildings lit up blue and lots of engagement with school kids and the wider population around the importance of valuing and saving water - among many other initiatives. 💦 At Watergate, we’ll be taking part in this important awareness drive and you can get involved by turning off all non-essential taps from 5-10pm on Thursday next week! More details in the comments 👇

100% ‘fair call out’. 👏 We love a bit of water geekery. 💦
My watergeekery might be making me unpopular at home 😧 I recently fitted a Watergate Sonic and this weekend I used data from the app to call out excessively long showers taken by my three kids. They’re all sports mad and Sunday saw rugby, netball and football matches (plus the usual precision repositioning exercise that an airline fleet manager would be proud of to get them there). It might seem a little mean (it was cold and muddy Sunday) but by each taking a twenty minute shower, we ended up using 40% more than the average house. That ain’t good. And they have (quite rightly!) been telling me to turn off the taps when brushing my teeth since they were four. Fair call out or overly geeky Dad? Ps: they’re all a bit older than the photo now!

Proud to be part of proposing this important change.
It’s time to stop Britain’s billions of litres of water leaks—starting with new homes. This summer, we wrote to the UK government and proposed that leak detectors should be mandated in every new build to claw back billions of litres of water lost to leaks in our homes every day. Since then: 👉 Ofwat fined water companies £158M for missing leak reduction targets. 👉 The Environment Agency warned that Britain will need an extra 5 billion litres of water per day by 2050. Emma Hardy MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at Defra, responded to our letter, but the government’s current position seems to be that setting targets alone is the solution. But with targets being routinely missed, it’s clear more action is needed. Here’s a key issue: Water utilities profit from water passing through their meter, even if it’s wasted due to leaks inside homes. This creates a potential conflict of interest, where there’s little direct incentive for utilities to address these leaks. Leak detectors don’t just spot and stop leaks. When people are aware of their water usage, they typically reduce consumption by around 15%. On top of that, embedded leak detection systems with automatic shut-off valves can reduce leaks by up to 80%. And there's a smoking gun almost nobody is talking about—every cubic metre of water wasted equals 10.4kg of CO2e, the same as burning 4.4 litres of petrol! Stopping leaks isn't just about saving water—it’s about tackling climate change. It’s not just Watergate that believes we need to take action on leaks within houses and businesses. Other organisations such as Waterwise, Water UK and 50L Home Coalition have all been calling for more action on this issue. Check out our CEO, Krystian Zajac's full exchange with the Minister: https://lnkd.in/e9JPFnzq What innovative solutions do you think could help combat water leaks in homes and businesses? #SavingWater #GreenBuilding #WaterConservation #EveryDropCounts #Watergate #DumbWater
