Why building water resilience should still be a priority After being given a significant investment boost in water resilience schemes, including new water resource projects that help to increase drought resilience and deliver and protect 159 million litres of water per day, water companies now have to scale back plans. Following the recent publication of its draft determinations, Ofwat has selected to slash investment in water companies’ water resilience schemes. We noted with interest that Jacob Tompkins, co-founder and CTO at the Water Retail Company, recently told Utility Week that cuts to resilience spending are the wrong areas to make savings, saying: “There is very little resilience in water supply networks at the moment. There’s no slack in the system for failures and a lot of it is falling apart.” We share the view that more investment is required now to help upgrade critical infrastructure. In 2023 there were 59,000 incidents on the water network in England alone. With an ageing infrastructure, a growing population and more extreme weather, the UK water network needs to prioritise ongoing and significant investment in resilience and support for innovation to help protect and prevent incidents.
