Professor of Exercise Medicine @ Edith Cowan University | Exercise Oncology Researcher

My Team and I are very grateful for the support provided by the World Cancer Research Fund. Exercise can be prescribed as a safe and effective medicine to produce vast changes in the body's internal environment to create powerful cancer suppression. In this study we will determine if there are differential effects of resistance versus aerobic exercise modes on myokine and extracellular vesicle expression and uptake by prostate cancer cells in men with prostate cancer while comparing responses in patients with early versus advanced disease. Thank you also for the great support from Edith Cowan University for our Exercise Medicine Research Institute.

In our 2023 grant call, we awarded a grant to Professor Robert Newton, a Professor of Exercise Medicine and Deputy Director of Edith Cowan University's Exercise Medicine Research Institute, which he established in 2004. Professor Newton's work of over 40 years has contributed to developing targeted exercise medicine for patients with various cancers by providing important evidence of exercise's role in health, quality of life, and clinical outcomes. In 2018, Professor Newton received the career achievement award from the Cancer Council WA and in 2019, was named the Western Australia Premier’s Scientist of the Year. Grant title: Enhancing circulatory myokines and extracellular vesicle uptake with targeted exercise in patients with Prostate Cancer: The MYEX Trial ⬇️ In the world of cancer treatment, it is crucial to understand how our body's natural defence mechanisms can help. Specifically, this research will investigate mechanisms involving molecules produced by our muscles (called myokines) and tiny particles (extracellular vesicles) that carry various substances throughout the body. The research will examine how different exercise modes impact this mechanism in patients with prostate cancer. By doing so researchers hope to uncover a critical way exercise can influence tumour growth and figure out which types of exercise work best for this purpos

  • Over 200 clinicians have written to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, backing the new report from the Obesity Health Alliance calling for a pragmatic solution to improve care, tackle health inequalities and prevent long-term health issues like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Addressing how obesity is treated in the NHS is an unavoidable priority for the government, with clinicians saying there are currently 'chronic underfunding and workforce challenges' and 'unequal access to services'. A review of services should go hand in hand with the government’s announced measures to prevent obesity such as the proposed ban on junk food advertising to children: https://lnkd.in/eJrd93eT
