Exciting news! We’re ready to share our in-house parametric carbon modelling tool, Cactus. Cactus employs Grasshopper and ShapeDiver to render parametric models in seconds. Whether you’re an engineer, architect, project manager, or client, understanding the carbon impact of your design decisions is as critical as ever. This is exactly what this tool does; play around with different grid sizes, materials, loads and more and calculate the embodied carbon of the building in real time. Sign up for a free account here: https://bit.ly/wyecactus We have released this stripped back version of the tool in the spirit of collaborative sustainable design. However, it’s still in the early stages of development and continues to evolve - if you run in to any problems, have feedback or ideas for improvement then just let us know at support.studio@webbyates.com. #sustainabledesign #carboncalculator #freetools #carbonmodelling #structuralengineering #parametricdesign #structuraldesign #parametricmodelling #3Dmodels #embodiedcarbon #sustainablebuildings

Award-winning multidisciplinary practice comprising structural, civil and building services engineers.
About us
Webb Yates Engineers is a multidisciplinary engineering practice comprising structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and public health engineers. With offices in London and Birmingham, we work with a diverse range of design teams and clients to realise intelligent and adventurous projects of all scales. We have won numerous competitions and awards for our work including IStructE Structural Awards, Civic Trust and RIBA awards, and two RIBA Stirling Prize nominations. During 2018 we won Construction News’ Award for Construction Consultant of the Year and Building Magazine’s Award for Engineering Consultant of the Year. In light of the severity of the climate emergency and huge contribution of the built environment to carbon emissions and other environmental indicators, we have signed the Construction Declares pledges. We will always offer environmentally conscientious solutions and where appropriate alternative options. We offer services dedicated to bringing the built environment in line with planetary limits. Central to our philosophy is an enjoyment of the collaborative creative process. It is this desire for unbounded collaboration, together with the broad-ranging interests of the team that has cultivated our multidisciplinary offer.

Last week I had the honour of representing Webb Yates Engineers at the British Embassy Paris to showcase the creativity of UK Architects and Engineers to French stakeholders. The event hosted a series of talks including one from ourselves alongside Pierre Bidaud of The Stonemasonry Company Limited and Amin Taha of GROUPWORK on our work to help decarbonise buildings. My talk covered: - How cheap energy has led us into a climate crisis. - A hierarchy to reduce embodied carbon in buildings by building less, reuse, intelligent and efficient engineering with low-carbon materials. - Use of hybrid and composite structures to push material and structural efficiency. - Creating elegant self-finished structures as part of a holistic architecture. - Our development in stone engineering to realise ever more adventurous buildings and structures. It was a pleasure to present and also listen to some of the other fantastic talks from Tim Lucas/ Price & Myers, Neil Thomas/ Atelier One, Arthur Mamou-Mani/ Mamou-Mani ltd., Stephane Vallotton/ Zaha Hadid, Patrick Richard/ Stanton Williams, Declan McCafferty/ Grimshaw #uk #architecture #engineering

Let the transformations begin! ✅ The Grade II* listed Birmingham Botanical Gardens will be undergoing its transformative changes after being approved for planning by Birmingham City Council last week. The project will provide a low-carbon, sympathetic reinterpretation of the existing gardens and structures through partial demolition, refurbishment, and reconfiguration, including the creation of a new external courtyard. We look forward to working with everyone involved in the project, promoting a more sustainable future! A new social hub for Birmingham Settlement has been shortlisted for a 2025 MacEwen Award! We collaborated with Axis Design Architects on the structural and civil designs for Phase 1, which opened up the space for regular activities and provided a new community café and facilities in the Red Shed. The centre is a beacon, set against the green landscape of the site to make it visible to passers-by from the reservoir path, and uses an unusual roof form and colour palette. The building is constructed primarily of clay blocks, timber and cellulose insulation, creating a new form of low-carbon masonry wall build-up. It's great to see this small community-focused project be recognised for it’s positive impact to Edgbaston. Axis Design Architects #shortlisted #community #architecture #engineering

Bjarke Ingels’ first Domus editorial is a tribute to stone, and features an essay on ‘The age of high-tech stone’ written by our very own Steve Webb. Modern construction relies on carbon-heavy materials, but stone is making a comeback. From vaulted homes to cutting-edge stone beams, architects are rethinking how we build. Could a high-tech stone age be the future of sustainable design? #thoughtleadership #stone #sustainability

We’re off to Paris! ✈️ We’re excited to announce that we have been invited by the British Embassy Paris to join an incredible lineup of UK architecture and engineering firms taking part in the British architecture and engineering exhibition. Pierre Bidaud (The Stonemasonry Company Limited) and Amin Taha (GROUPWORK) will be joining Rob Nield (Webb Yates Engineers) at the Ambassador’s Residence next week to present case studies outlining how we best challenge the existing conditions of a sustainable future in engineering. We’ll be showcasing how we use stone in our projects and its impact on paving the way toward a low-carbon future. #architecture #lowcarbondesign #engineering #construction #exhibition

2025 is here, and so is the final countdown to Paradise. 🌿 63,250 sq ft of sustainable, timber-framed workspace in Lambeth, London SE11. This six-storey masterpiece isn’t just another office building. Its innovative design locks away the equivalent of 60 years of tenant operating emissions, setting a bold new standard for low-carbon workplaces. Paradise is proof that sustainability and ambition go hand-in-hand and it’s only the beginning. As Bywater’s first mass-timber building, it paves the way for a greener future across the UK.
