New research paper on hybrid WFH in the Government sector. They examine the productivity of teams entering case details for the police. They find units rotated to hybrid WFH are 12% more productive per day, which appears to be due to *reduced distractions*. When supervisors are allowed to decide who works on which cases at home vs work these productivity gains rise further. This suggests managers understand the pros and cons of home vs office working, so flexibility is also valuable. Co-authors: Alessandra Fenizia at George Washington University and Tom Kirchmaier at the London School of Economics.

Imagine a world where stating, "𝗠𝘆 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗶𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲," isn’t met with raised eyebrows. Many of us yearn for a career that allows us to live fully outside of work—where being fairly compensated and doing meaningful work doesn’t equate to sacrificing our personal lives at the altar of professional advancement. This dream, however, bumps against the reality of prevailing workplace expectations and the shadow of generational judgments. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁. It’s a challenge to navigate these waters, especially when the collective mindset hasn’t fully shifted. But the journey towards a more 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 ethos begins with 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆 about our career aspirations and boundaries. It’s about acknowledging that our desires may evolve, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s time for a candid conversation about what success truly means. #work #career #workboundaries #remotework #bounderies #worklifebalance #EmpoweringPeople #happinessatwork #mindset

COMPLETELY VALID REASONS TO COME INTO THE OFFICE: – to show off your outfit – to show off your haircut – to eat the biscuits – to catch up with your work bestie – to tell everyone about the holiday you’re going on – to tell everyone about the holiday you’ve just got back from – to show off your tan – because you need to return something to a shop near the office – because you’re craving a Pret – because you’re meeting friends after work

Is a bad manager reason enough to quit a job? Seven in 10 U.S. workers say they would leave a job if they had a bad manager, according to the latest findings of LinkedIn’s Workforce Confidence survey. This sentiment rings most true for younger employees — 75% of Gen Z workers and 77% of millennials say a bad boss would motivate them to look for a new job, compared to 68% of Gen Xers and 61% of baby boomers. What’s more? Those looking to leave their managers aren’t necessarily thinking they could do the job better. Among individual contributors, just one third of workers say they aspire to become people managers themselves, with millennial workers most likely to say they’re eyeing a promotion into people management. Some workers may just not see the value in pursuing a career in management. According to separate LinkedIn findings, nearly half of U.S. managers report feeling burned out from their jobs — possibly thanks to stress over the threat of middle management layoffs or increasing productivity demands from the top. What are some signs of a good manager? And how important is it to have a supportive manager for the job you do? ✍️: Rachel Cromidas 📊: Allie Lewis, Bud Rashidian, Karen Bills

Looking for a job, especially fully remote, is a full-time job. Researching new openings and companies, vetting if the role is remote or remote with travel, hybrid, remote with country restrictions, the application process, scheduling interviews, preparing for interviews, interviewing, reaching for feedback, another interview, take-home projects, negotiating an offer, accepting the offer, and onboarding. But you are doing this all for free, with a much higher level of stress than you would have at working, working for money. The uncertainty of your next paycheck, the uncertainty of your career and the next company you choose, what other people think, and so much more. But trust me: ↳ it is not your fault you got laid off ↳ it is not your fault you have to apply to hundreds of openings to even get an interview. ↳ it is not your fault you want more flexibility  ↳ it is not your fault you prioritise your family and health  ↳ it is not your fault your life priorities have changed It is the market. And you are probably tired of hearing that. People in the remote hiring industry should stay focused and hands-on in their strategy to secure their next remote role. One step at a time. #remote #remotework #WorkFromHome #opentowork #jobseekers

    Insightful job market landscape!

The job market is now at an inflection point, cooling below a healthy temperature in today's July jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Almost every stat came in below expectations: The unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, triggering the Sahm rule. Jobs growth slowed to 114,000 in July and wage growth cooled to 3.6% year-over-year. The rising unemployment rate is the most concerning indicator as the Sahm rule has traditionally been a strong recession warning. The labor market has been a bulwark against recession fears over the last year, but rising unemployment points to cracks in the dam. And once those cracks start to expand, it's hard to patch them up quickly enough to contain the pressure on the other side. Notably, the rising unemployment rate is not as much due to permanent layoffs as it is due to other factors: temporary layoffs (perhaps due to Beryl), job leavers and labor force reentrants. The share of the unemployed on permanent layoff actually fell in July. That's still something to be concerned about: This is consistent with a job market that features low layoffs but sluggish hiring that means workers looking for a new/first job are getting bottlenecked & stuck in unemployment. The Federal Reserve’s decision not to cut interest rates at its July meeting earlier this week was predicated on a resilient job market. That decision is already looking out of date just two days later. If cracks in the job market are showing now, the soft landing will be at risk if relief in the form of rate cuts won’t arrive until September & it takes time for that relief to trickle through the economy. #economy #news
