Designing the Future of New Towns: Balancing Sustainability, Community, and Viability. The New Towns Taskforce's interim report, published yesterday, puts forward 100 potential locations. We're yet to see where these are, but the challenge ahead lies in ensuring that new towns are not only sustainable but also deeply connected to their unique sense of place. At Willmore Iles Architects, we believe that truly successful developments are those that nurture both communities and biodiversity. This philosophy is at the heart of our approach, as demonstrated in our work on Silverlake Dorset—a prime example of how a masterplanned community can thrive in harmony with nature. Silverlake Dorset represents our commitment to creating environments where people can live sustainably and feel rooted to the land around them. As the government moves closer to site selection, New Towns must be designed with an eye on the evolution of communities—not just the present, but how these towns and environments will develop over decades. We look forward to the final report in summer 2025, and to continuing our role in shaping this next generation of sustainable towns. What are your thoughts on the interim report? #newtowns #gardencommunities #housingcrisis #planningreform
About us
Willmore Iles Architects Ltd is an RIBA Chartered Architectural Practice with a strong track record in producing successful schemes for our clients that are informed by context, aim to maximise opportunities and are guided by the principle of sustainable design. Willmore Iles Architects are at the forefront of developments in the purpose designed student accommodation sector and have been the architects for some of the largest new build schemes for UK Universities, including the 2000 bedroom campus redevelopment at the University of Exeter and the 2500 bedroom new on campus student village at the University of Hertfordshire. We have built up a reputation with universities and third-party providers as an expert architectural practice in the sector, completing over 10,000 student bedrooms with a further 3,500 bedrooms in development. Our reputation for innovation continues with one of our latest projects, the UK’s first True Zero Carbon and BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ halls at the University of Hertfordshire. All three directors at the practice are involved on a day-to-day basis throughout the design and implementation of schemes for our clients. Each project has allocated key personnel, including a project architect and a project director who will ensure continuity of high quality of service throughout the project from feasibility to completion on site and building in use. We work closely with the construction team during the design and implementation process, ensuring that the design supports the sometimes complex phasing and decanting programmes required when working on ‘live sites’. The practice has pioneered new construction methodologies for student accommodation and has great links throughout the critical supply chain. We are proud of our record of delivering schemes to programme and on budget.
