Weston Williamson to submit £140m plans for Wales’s busiest station
Winner at the Building Beauty Awards, our scheme at Barking Riverside Station was described by the judges as “as an elegant, disciplined piece of work, light and airy at platform level. The result is a building with personality and visual coherence.” The project abides by our practice’s core values. 🤝 People-focused: the station is fully accessible with step-free access from street to train and extensive glazing creates views towards the River Thames and provides shelter for passengers on the elevated platforms. 💡 Inventive: at platform level, faceted and perforated Corten panels screen the viaduct and conceal services, while the exposed roof trusses create interplay of light and shadow while also facilitating regular structural inspections. 🌎 Responsible: the station is central to the development of one of London’s largest new neighbourhoods, it serves as a beacon for the Barking Riverside development, connecting the community of 10,800 homes to the London transport network, and acting as a hub for the area’s new healthcare, shopping, community and leisure facilities. We’re pleased to see Transport for Wales (TfW) release images showing our proposal for Cardiff Central Station and what it could look like after an investment programme of up to £140 million to enhance the station. TfW is leading the scheme to revamp Wales’ busiest railway station, bringing us on as Lead Architects working with Mott MacDonald, and these new visuals provide a future glimpse of how the station could look. The proposed improvements will modernise the station and support long-term passenger growth, while still complementing the history and heritage of the building. Philip Turner, Design Director and the Project’s Lead at WW+P said of the scheme: “Working with TfW on such a significant station for the region has been hugely rewarding. The upgrade scheme will future proof the station site for generations to come, whilst protecting the rich historical fabric people know today.” Read more about our design: https://lnkd.in/emHKg5Xx or in the Architects’ Journal: https://lnkd.in/eAiqND-p WW+P, part of Egis' Architecture Line | #raildevelopment #TOD #stationdesign #TfW #cardiff #rail

It’s fantastic to see the London Growth Plan, featuring our work on the Bakerloo Line Extension (BLE) and development on and around the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), released last week by the Mayor of London. The plan outlines a ten-year programme that revolves around sustainable infrastructure across the city and beyond. It will see the addition of around 200,000 new homes and potential direct high speed links to new locations around Europe. With WW+P projects such as our work with AECOM on the BLE, DLR, development around our Barking Riverside Station and more mentioned by name in the plan, we are thrilled to continue to be involved in the growth and futureproofing of our home city. We’re delighted to see Isha Ahmed picking up her The Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects RIBA Part I (Level 6) prize at the ceremony at Mansion House last week. Congrats Isha! Read more about the awards: https://lnkd.in/egUfc-n6
"By aligning transport projects with urban planning and sustainability objectives, cities can foster inclusive growth, connectivity, and long-term economic resilience. As London continues to evolve, these projects serve as a model for integrating transport infrastructure into broader urban development strategies, ensuring a more sustainable and prosperous future for all." Read Project Director Raffaella Rospo's write-up of NLA's recent insightful webinar discussing transport infrastructure’s role in shaping community identity in London. NLA brought together experts to discuss the transformative effects of projects in London like the Elizabeth Line and the potential of the Bakerloo Line Extension - both of which WW+P is pleased to play a significant role in. Raffaella shared her views as a 2025 NLA Expert Panellist for Transport and Infrastructure (pictured here enjoying NLA's recent 'Meet the Experts' gathering!) She joins other leading London figures to focus on the future of mobility and modal share of streets for all users, as well as the impact of transport infrastructure in unlocking growth and accessibility across the capital. What works for small towns and rural areas? Paj Valley of Stantec brought together a panel at Interchange this week to answer this question, featuring WW+P Head of Landscape Architecture Isabella Bhoan, Grace Grant of WSP and Andrew Atkins of Solum / Kier Property. In a discussion about what is possible in low-demand and rural areas and how transport hubs can act as catalysts for development and regeneration, Isabella spoke about our work on Hereford Transport Hub; the challenges of the area combined with the opportunities to celebrate the location and create a landmark for Hereford. Key to our design was understanding pedestrian movement and how to create a public realm forecourt for recreation, and a local anchorage for the public. With extensive stakeholder engagement and user analysis, the project was a shining example of our core values in action - being people-focused, responsible and inventive. Thank you to #Interchange for having us. Learn more about Hereford Transport Hub: https://lnkd.in/esZnyk9j WW+P, part of Egis' Architecture Line | #hereford #transport #infrastructure #activetravel
