Great to see this piece which explores an array of developments in the deforestation data landscape, ahead of forthcoming regulation. For this article, I chatted to Catherine Early for Reuters' Ethical Corporation Magazine about Forest IQ and the DEFT Pathway. These tools provide standardised data and guidance, helping financial institutions to identify deforestation risk in their holdings and categorise companies according to their level of progress, highlighting priority and timebound next actions. Thank you Imogen for presenting our work on advancing transparency in the palm oil sector! Imogen highlighted SPOTT's role in improving ESG disclosures in the palm oil sector and how direct engagement with companies helps in achieving this. While palm oil companies are ahead in corporate disclosures, challenges remain, especially in the supplier and smallholder categories where scores are lowest. Smallholders are vital to global palm oil supply chains, supplying large volumes of oil, yet they often face barriers to participation. Addressing these challenges is crucial. To start, companies should extend their commitments to cover all their sourcing, disclose details of smallholders in their supply chain and increase support for the smallholders they source from. Events like this showcase the importance of collaboration between palm oil companies, civil society organisations, buyers and communities to drive forward sustainable and equitable supply chains.

Call for businesses and investors during #ColombiaCOP16 - engage and act for biodiversity 🦜 Two years after the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), CBD #COP16 marks the first meeting focused on turning commitments into implementation. As global attention turns to Colombia, it’s time for businesses and investors to put nature at the heart of decision-making. Biodiversity and climate are deeply interconnected, and without bold action, the accelerating loss of forests and ecosystems will have severe consequences for both nature and the economy. We are calling on businesses and investors to take immediate steps to address these urgent challenges: 🟢 Commit to transparency: Align operations within the supply chain with global biodiversity goals and adopt rigorous due diligence to halt biodiversity loss and deforestation. 🟢 Mobilise finance for nature: Contribute to the collective goal of $20 billion by 2025 to fund nature-positive solutions and restore critical habitats. 🟢 Integrate biodiversity into climate strategies: Implement nature-based solutions that not only mitigate climate change but also restore ecosystems and protect species from extinction. 🟢 Engage with policymakers and collaborate with experts: Partner with government bodies and experts, such as conservationists and scientists, to guarantee that policies are not only effectively implemented but also yield tangible, science-driven results.
