There is still time to catch Me Me Me! with Frances Aviva Blane in our Woodstock Gallery. In this exhibition we present portraits and abstract works that reveal the metaphysical through paint. The struggle with visualising the ephemeral and the fleeting is visible in these works. Time is layered lightly in some and in others the thickness and complex interlocking of paint and pigment bears testimony to the intense process of self examination. These works are visceral and urgent, vessels that reveal the artist's inner landscape of self. Studio visits are the best and when planning exhibitions, it is the curator's turn to be #creative. I love this particular to and fro between artist and curator - the tussle of #ideas and #interpretation, the sharing of #perspectives and #values. In 2020, Frances Aviva Blane welcomed artist and filmmaker Penny Woolcock into her studio, whose short film offers a fantastic glimpse into FAB as she is known, and her artistic process. We've been selecting new works from the studio today that will form the solo in October, and super excited to be sharing more on that soon.. watch this space! https://lnkd.in/e52HR_C3
One of the best parts of the job is going on studio visits, talking to the artists and taking time to really examine their process. This morning I joined Lizzie of Atelier Zuleika to the studio of Frances Aviva Blane who we will be exhibiting in the Autumn. Proud to say at Zuleika Gallery we have a strong roster of #female artists. This research shows why that is important as gender bias is still holding strong in the world of art collecting. Please watch the video below! It’s a fascinating bit of research about the bias among art collectors for art perceived to have been made by women. The exact same painting when shown to the collectors and attributed instead to a man is thought of greater value… watch the video to get the full picture (scuse the pun!) #genderbias
Is the (#art) market efficient? If so, the law of one #price should hold. My co-authors Roman Kräussl, Marco Navone, Patrick Verwijmeren and I show instead that #gender #culture is a source of pricing #bias in the art #market, see the clip below. Why is this important? Because #price is often used to infer #quality. This inference only makes sense if the art market is efficient. If it is not, and prices are biased, this correspondence breaks down. Since art prices for #women are systematically lower, as we show, a mistaken belief in efficient markets creates barriers for #female #artists. As the late curator Okwui Enwezor said in an interview in 2018 "‘excellence’ and ‘quality’ are some of the code words used to push back against change." As Camille Morineau said "To fix things museums and academics should focus on filling the gaps, ‘producing and sharing academically robust information on women artists...". Let's do it! This exhibition examines the work of artist Keith Vaughan at a time when homosexuality was criminalised in Britain. These intimate drawings were not intended for public display as they would have been dangerous for Vaughan to exhibit. Dance with me in the sunlit pools New exhibition by Carrie Stanley opens tomorrow 💫
The first week in April is a big week for me. On 3rd April the Derwent Drawing Prize show opens at the Gallery@Oxo including my drawing ‘An Anatomy of Grief’ (image below). Out of 6,000 entries from 2,324 artists in 77 countries... 68 artworks were shortlisted for the exhibition, it’s a huge achievement. It’s the second of my grief works to have been selected for drawing prize exhibition having already shown at the Trinity Buoy Wharf drawing prize show in 2022. Gallery@OXO, OXO Tower Wharf, London, from 4th April to 14th April. The exhibition will be free to see. The 6th April sees my solo show ‘Dance with me in the sunlit pools’ open @zuleikagallery in Woodstock. The show will run for three weeks ending on 27th April. I’ll be at the gallery 6th and 7th and look forward to talking to everyone about the work. Image below of ‘Relations in time ’ oil and pastel on linen which is part of the show.
