"We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." – Chief Seattle's Speech, 1854. Deep in the Scottish Highlands, Ceannacroc Estate stands out as as a testament to nature's resilience. Over the years, the Girvan family has planted over a million trees and seen the benefits for the animals and generations to come. This year, in partnership with Zulu Ecosystems, Scottish Forestry, and the Woodland Carbon Code, Ceannacroc has also become home to the first ancient woodland restoration programme of its kind to qualify for carbon credits. This recognition of the value of ancient woodlands under the code is set to pave the way for many more projects made financially viable. Delighted to announce our partnership with Environmental Farmers Group (EFG) 🌳 EFG and Zulu Ecosystems are joining forces to help farmers identify opportunities to turn marginal land into new woodlands and participate in the woodland carbon market. The landmark initiative, backed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs's Natural Environment Investment Readiness Fund (NEIRF), aims to transform woodland creation efforts across 600,00 hectares in the south of England as part of EFG's Catchment Conservation Plan. The partnership includes: ↳ Taking a farmer-led approach to meet the UK's net zero ambitions ↳ Conducting thorough woodland landscape assessments and working with farmers to identify areas that are most environmentally impactful and most marginal for agriculture ↳ Enhancing native woodland habitats, sequestering carbon, and providing social and environmental benefits while adding long-term value to farms through woodland carbon credits 📢 "By helping farmers to work together in shaping a compelling plan for the landscape, we can deliver large scale nature projects that combine environmental impact, financial viability, and community support," said Edward Asseily, CEO of Zulu Ecosystems. “Woodlands are one piece in the landscape mosaic jigsaw. By working with Zulu Ecosystems, we hope to build the business case for smaller woodlands, connected as part of our wider Catchment Conservation Plans to meet our net zero ambitions,” says Digby Sowerby, Operations Officer at Natural Capital Advisory who support EFG. This project is the first of its kind for Zulu Ecosystems and EFG members, establishing a model that could be replicated in other areas across the UK. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eUWqqrdg

Proud to announce that Zulu Ecosystems and Severn Trent have been awarded funding from UK Research and Innovation to lead catchment-scale nature based solutions in the Idle and Torne River catchment – a priority area for environmental improvement, where 60% of water bodies are failing to meet good ecological status. The catchment also presents a substantial opportunity for nature recovery, with the potential to restore over 5,000 hectares of priority habitats and significantly improve water resources management. Martin Girvan, the third-generation landowner of Ceannacroc Estate, is committed to protecting as much of Ceannacroc's ancient woodland as possible, letting native trees grow and flourish through natural regeneration. 📢 "Since the mid 1990s, Ceannacroc has transitioned from a traditional hill farm with sheep, cattle, and venison into a business driven by prioritising environmental problems: planting woodlands, restoring peatlands, and moving to renewable energies." In partnership with Scottish Forestry, Zulu Ecosystems has helped the Girvan family regenerate Ceannacroc’s Lost Woods from scoping and analysis to project development and delivery, MRV, impact, and financials. Today, the Lost Woods of Ceannacroc made history, becoming the first ancient woodland restoration programme of its kind to qualify for credits under the #WoodlandCarbonCode. Ceannacroc is a 5,300-hectare estate situated deep in the Scottish Highlands harbouring remnants of the ancient Caledonian Pinewood: a globally unique habitat that once covered 1.5 million hectares of the Highlands. Today, less than one per cent of the Pinewood remains as small fragments. 📢 In partnership with the Girvan family, Scottish Forestry and the Woodland Carbon Code, our Lost Woods project is restoring the remaining derelict ancient woodland by encouraging natural regeneration and bringing it to validation for the first time. Forty miles from London, on the Isle of Sheppey, lies one of the UK’s only family owned and managed National Nature Reserves: Elmley Nature Reserve. This low-lying sanctuary of marshes and big skies is home to the largest lowland collection of breeding waders in the country. 📢 After becoming a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) in the early 1980s, farmers and passionate conservationists – Philip and Corinne Merricks – decided to designate a radical 95% of the holding for conservation. When their daughter, Georgina Fulton, took on the Estate with her husband, Gareth, they identified an opportunity to create a responsibly managed area for nature tourism to benefit people and nature alike. We are very excited to announce that EFG has been successful in two applications to DEFRA’s Natural Environment Investment Readiness Fund (NEIRF) Round 3. In our first project, EFG farmers will be working with Zulu Ecosystems to scope out sustainable woodland projects of all sizes. By working on a combined approach, we will aggregate planting projects to create a viable business model funded through the sale of ecosystem services.   In our second project, farmers in the EFG Northern Lincs area will be bringing forward environmental projects in what is one of the UK’s most industrialised, carbon intensive areas. By understanding where farmers can reduce emissions and sequester carbon, we can provide new natural capital value to Northern Lincs.   We look forward to getting going on these projects straight away!
