It’s incredible to see this regreening impact over just 6 years from Justdiggit’s 'half-moon bunds' in Tanzania 🇹🇿. What’s even more amazing is that they harness a water conservation technique that has been used for centuries by various indigenous communities around the world. Evidence suggests that half-moon bunds were used by ancient civilisations across North Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia, where water management was critical for their survival. Examples include: 🇪🇬 Egypt: Where they were constructed to manage floodwaters from the Nile and Tigris-Euphrates rivers, the bunds helping to create fertile agricultural lands. 🇮🇳 India: In arid regions like Rajasthan, similar techniques have been used for centuries to capture monsoon rains and reduce soil erosion. Key Benefits: 💧 Water Conservation: The excavated bund soil is placed on the downhill side to form a barrier, with the open end facing uphill to capture runoff water. This method significantly improves soil moisture by efficiently capturing and storing rainwater. 🌱 Erosion Control: The bund structures also reduces soil erosion by slowing down water flow and encouraging sediment deposition. 🌾 Food Security: Often food crops that can survive in poor soils (and can grow quickly) are cultivated in or by the bunds, including Pigeon Pea, Lablab, Sweet Potato, Moringa and Sorghum 🌳 Environmental Restoration: This increased vegetation cover helps restore degraded lands (60% of land is degrading in sub-Saharan Africa), promotes biodiversity and sequesters carbon Other organisations using half-moon bunds around the world include: CIFOR-ICRAF / International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) / Oxfam / FAO / United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) / World Vision / African Development Bank Group / LEAD Foundation Tanzania (the partner for the project pictured) This is another great example that often traditional wisdom can address our modern challenges…we don’t need to over-engineer solutions! 🌍 This week marked the sixth year of London Climate Action Week (#LCAW) 🌍 #LCAW2024 is a major global climate event launched by E3G and the Mayor of London. With over 300 events and 50,000+ attendees, LCAW showcases the expertise and global influence of London-based organisations. At Gentian, we take pride in supporting such causes through our cutting-edge #AI which enables us to efficiently measure and monitor biodiversity in both urban and rural areas. For example, in 2023, we published our first Green Roof League Table of urban areas across the UK. The report highlighted the benefits that green roofs bring, such as improved air quality and enhanced biodiversity, while identifying barriers such as a lack of awareness. 🔗 Download the report here now: https://lnkd.in/etsr8kMC www.gentian.io info@gentian.team #Sustainability #GreenRoofs #UrbanDevelopment #Biodiversity #ClimateChange #Gentian #LivingRoofs #Gentian

20 startups and NGOs using AI to restore nature 🌳 “the biodiversity crisis doesn’t receive anywhere near the level of attention as climate,” points out environmentalist Siddarth Shrikanth Slowly but surely, technologies and markets are coalescing to put nature high up on the agenda, with big implications for the natural world. The economic case for nature is heavily reliant on carbon credits, with voluntary carbon markets projected to grow significantly by 2030. However, proving the effectiveness of carbon removal projects like tree planting and soil sequestration is challenging, leading to increased scrutiny and investment in MRV solutions. MRV is now one of the hottest areas of carbon tech, with startups devising ways to measure — and prove the value — of “ecosystem services” through AI, bioacoustic monitoring, satellite imaging, and remote sensing And these companies are making it happen: AgriSound Albedo Albo Climate apic.ai biometrio.earth BioPhonia Carbon Rewild Chloris Geospatial Conservation AI Earth Blox Gentian Meteory Pivotal Future Rainforest Connection (RFCx) Spoor Stream Ocean Synature TransparenC Wilder Sensing Wildlife Acoustics, Inc. Gentian has been working with UK municipalities to remotely map vegetation in private gardens, in order to account for green infrastructure and potential for flood and climate resilience. We found that private gardens, in total, often have the largest number of trees compared to other green spaces in a given city or borough.

Private gardens in Britain cover 10 million acres, more than the total area of all the country's nature reserves. Time to rewild them! We have the same potential in other parts of the world, especially the EU. 💡 Why does it matter? Though small, these gardens create crucial green links between urban nature and the countryside, forming essential wildlife corridors. + nature has numerous physical & mental health benefits, so we still profit. 👩🌾 5 actions you can take to rewild your garden: # 1 Let it grow: Mow your lawn less frequently to allow grasses & wildflowers to bloom, providing food for pollinators like bees and butterflies. # 2 Plant native species: Choose native plants and trees that are well-suited to your local environment. These plants support local wildlife and require less maintenance. # 3 Create wildlife habitats: Leave piles of leaves, logs, or rocks in your garden to provide shelter for insects, small mammals, and birds. # 4 Add water: Install a small pond or birdbath to attract amphibians, birds, and insects. Water sources are crucial for many species. # 5 Cut chemical use: Avoid using pesticides and fertilizers. These chemicals can harm beneficial insects and disrupt the natural balance of your garden. (more tips in the comments) Just imagine. Without the government or companies, we could double the space of nature. Just by changing our gardens. Isn't that empowering? Let's double nature! P.S. What do you think? Would you make your garden a bit wilder? #biodiversity #nature #garden
