To 'continue' or 'reject' a take-off 4 kts before V1 following an engine explosion? 🤔 This was the situation presented to the Captain of Blue Panorama flight 1504 back in 2004 on departure from Rome Fiumicino bound for Havana. The 767-300ER experienced a blast and engine fire because of a leaking high-pressure fuel hose. Apparently, over 700 kgs of fuel had leaked into the nacelle during taxi. It ignited during take-off. Some will argue 1 second/4 kts prior to V1, the captain should have immediately rejected. However, with the FO as 'Pilot Flying' and a potential delay in reacting to a reject command, potential local circumstances such as runway length, aircraft loading/performance or weather conditions, this could indicate why the Captain opted to continue and subsequently land 42 tons over the max landing weight for a 767-300. Regardless, the handling of the situation by the Captain, with a clearly startled First Officer, is highly impressive. Immediate and direct decision making led to all 287 souls on board evacuating the aircraft safely with no injuries or damage to the aircraft fuselage. Watch below! 👇 Should he have rejected?
