About us
Spectrum is a finite natural resource that relates to the radio frequencies allocated to communications over the airwaves. Our mission is to ensure mobile operators have timely and affordable access to low-, mid, and high-band spectrum. Without it, mobile operators can’t meet the growing demand for high-speed, mobile broadband services with good coverage in all parts of the world. Sufficient internationally harmonised spectrum is essential to ensure the quality that consumers and businesses have come to expect, and rely on, from mobile networks. We work with governments, regulators, international organisations and the mobile industry to collectively help launch innovative services and connect more people.

In North America, continued mobile evolution depends on the expansion of operator’s mobile spectrum holdings: 🏞️ Rural connectivity challenges in North America are being met with appropriate low-band spectrum. Adding 600 MHz to existing low bands is shown to raise download speeds by 30–50% in rural areas. 🇺🇸 The launch of the US National Spectrum Strategy, which includes the lower part of the 3.5 GHz range, is an important step for the US as it works to address the amount of mid-band spectrum available for mobile services. 📶 5 GHz of mmWave spectrum is required per mature market for enhanced mobile broadband, FWA and enterprise applications. North America has been a pioneer on mmWave spectrum assignments, expanding to other bands and unlocking additional possibilities. 🌎 WRC-23 identified 6 GHz for mobile use by countries in every ITU Region. However, in the US and Canada, the full 6 GHz band remains unlicensed. WRC-27 will be a critical event for North America due to the lack of 6 GHz spectrum assigned to licensed mobile services in the region. The 11th Latin America Spectrum Management Conference in Merida, Mexico was an insightful gathering of experts discussing the future of spectrum in the region. The GSMA, represented by Luciana Camargos and Carol Sosa Leguizamón, took the stage and shared valuable insights. 📈 Data demand is skyrocketing. In 2023, global mobile data growth exceeded the total traffic in 2018. With 71% of mobile data use indoors and 85% of indoor connectivity reliant on mid-bands, the 6 GHz band will be critical for future growth. 🌎 Coverage gap: 5% of the world’s population lacks mobile broadband coverage, and D2D could help close that gap. Usage gap: 38% of the population living within mobile broadband coverage are not using it. Bridging this divide requires stakeholders to work together. 🔏 Set-asides for enterprises may not be the most economically efficient approach for digitalisation and could harm consumer download speeds by reducing the available public spectrum. Private networks don’t necessarily require private spectrum. Enterprises can leverage solutions from MNOs or use spectrum-sharing frameworks and leasing models. 🤝 A big thank you to all who participated and contributed to these critical discussions shaping the future of connectivity in Latin America! #latamspectrum #6ghz #d2d #ntn #privatenetworks #mobile #connectivity #latam #digitaleconomy #gsma

The Asia Pacific region has some of the world’s fastest 5G networks. According to a new Opensignal study in partnership with the GSMA Spectrum team, APAC countries that have licensed larger amounts of spectrum have a better user experience. The analysis also shows that 2G and 3G usage is declining, opening the door for technology upgrades. In this blog, Luiz Felippe Zoghbi reflects on the insights from the analysis and the rationale for legacy network sunsets: https://lnkd.in/dA4ZDKj2 #mobile #connectivity #5g #networksunsets #spectrum #apac

We saved the best for last! The closing session of #M360 APAC delved into spectrum roadmaps, pricing strategies, regulatory frameworks, and the transition from 2G/3G, offering a comprehensive look at the future of spectrum management. Key takeaways: 🌱 Sound spectrum policy drives sustainability. Delays or restrictions in assignments aren’t just economic issues—they cost the planet carbon emissions. We can improve our methodologies to ensure spectrum benefits economies, communities, and the environment. 📶 2 GHz of mid-band spectrum per market by 2030 will be crucial. Low bands, 1,500 MHz, 3.8-4.2 GHz, and 6 GHz will be key to future spectrum planning. WRC-27 will explore new bands for the evolution of 5G and 6G. 📈 The pace of 5G adoption varies globally. Effective 5G rollouts depend on decisions prioritising capacity, coverage, and affordability. 📊 Data demand is skyrocketing. In 2023, global mobile data growth exceeded the total traffic in 2018. With 71% of mobile data use indoors and 85% of indoor connectivity reliant on mid-bands, the 6 GHz band will be critical for future growth. ⚙️ Capacity + conditions = productivity & sustainability. Delivering capacity at the right time, with harmonised power limits and well-planned licensing, will be key to boosting 5G performance. 🌇 Legacy network sunsets create space to refarm spectrum for technology upgrades, improve energy efficiency, rationalise device portfolios, optimise network operations and realise capex savings. Thanks to all speakers for this crucial debate Luciana Camargos, Mark Giles, Tze Shing Chew, Dr Yongsoo Yuk, Foong Chee Kheong (CK), Robert Wyrzykowski and Yishen Chan. #spectrum #spectrumpolicy #spectrummanagement #spectrumroadmaps #spectrumpricing #mobile #connectivity #apac
