Over the past two decades, the mobile economy in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has experienced remarkable growth. By the end of 2021, 515 million people in the region subscribed to mobile services—a number projected to reach 613 million by 2025. In 2021, the mobile sector contributed 8% to the region’s GDP, equivalent to over USD 140 billion in economic value. However, despite this progress, challenges remain. In 2022, the usage gap stood at 61%, while the coverage gap affected 17% of the population—nearly one-fifth of the region. One key issue is the significant tax burden on the mobile sector, which includes both consumer and operator-specific taxes. High consumer taxes make mobile devices and services less affordable, while taxes on operators limit their capacity to invest in expanding network coverage. Addressing these challenges is crucial for further unlocking the potential of mobile connectivity across SSA. Read more on this in our report: https://lnkd.in/dgzJjFEp

Women are now 15% less likely than men to use mobile internet across LMICs. This translates to around 265 million fewer women than men. 📕 In this annual flagship report, read about the barriers that are preventing equal mobile internet use between men and women, and learn what can be done to address them 👉 https://bit.ly/3UIqBmq #MobileGenderGap #DigitalInclusion #mobile #MobileInternet #GSMA #UKAid #Sida
