Today is International Women in Engineering Day which aims to celebrate women working in engineering, to change perceptions of the industry and to inspire more girls to consider a career in the field. It was founded by Dawn Bonfield MBE, former Chief executive of the Women’s Engineering Society. This fits perfectly with the Soroptimists of Poole, Purbeck & district who have chosen this year to celebrate women in “ non traditional “ careers. Currently only 9% of the UKs engineering workforce is female. In 2016 Dawn was given an MBE for her “ services to the promotion of diversity in engineering “. She lobbies for inclusivity in engineering and stresses that it is not the dirty industry that people think. Not only is the UK suffering from a skills shortage in engineering but we are lagging behind the rest of Europe, as the country with the lowest percentage of engineering professionals. Hopefully role models like Dawn will inspire more girls to choose STEM subjects and influence the technologies of the future. #engineering #internationalwomeninengineeringday #dawnbonfield #womenequality #womenequalityday

This year the Poole District and Purbeck Soroptimist Club is celebrating women's achievements in male dominated professions. We started on Monday night with a fascinating talk by Lois Yates who was the first female plumber to qualify in Dorset over 20 years ago. Lois says there is still a stigma attached to being seen in a man’s world. She qualified at @thebpcollege in mechanical engineering and started her own business in 2000. She has since built-up her business and trained 5 apprentices. Lois told Poole Soroptimists she spends much of her working day on her knees but loves her work! Our Fresh Thoughts booklet is now launched throughout Dorset. A big thank you to the speakers and all delegates who came to our launch event in Poundbury. A wonderful morning of networking, information / experience sharing, and distributing Fresh Thoughts across a huge network of professionals supporting domestic violence victims in Dorset.

Our members attending the recent Southern Region Meeting at Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield had the opportunity to do a woodland walk guided by one of the rangers and learnt to identify birdsong using the Merlin app. Environmental issues are one of the key UN goals that Soroptimists around the globe are working on.
