TWI has been at the forefront of cold spray research and development for over two decades, carrying out projects for our Industrial Members and leading government programmes. Recently, we have made significant investments in cold spray R&D, including the acquisition of the Titomic TKF-1000. The Titomic TKF-1000 system is a turnkey cold spray deposition cell designed for additive manufacturing and production. It can be scaled up and configured to meet the requirements of the end user. Collaborating with Titomic, this machine was built to our specifications and features, enabling us to conduct a broad range of R&D work for our Member companies. This system comprises an Impact Innovations 5/11 cold spray gun, with two powder feeders capable of spraying helium and nitrogen. The nitrogen gas supply comes from a bulk system that allows continuous spraying for days at a time. The cold spray gun is manipulated using a six-axis robot, which works synchronously with a rotary positioner and a component table on a sliding track for easy loading and unloading using external lift equipment. The build volume is approximately 1 m³, and it can process parts weighing up to a tonne. It is also supported by CAD/CAM software for generating deposition toolpaths suited for a variety of applications, including coating deposition, component repair, and additive manufacturing. What is Cold Spray❓ Cold spray technology is a solid-state process in which powder particles are accelerated to a critical velocity by a supersonic jet of preheated compressed gas. Upon high-velocity impact with a substrate, the severe plastic deformation of the particles disrupts thin oxide films, promoting intimate metallic contact between the particles and the substrate. This process creates bonding similar to explosive welding, resulting in the solid-state deposition of material layers. Cold spray technology is invaluable across various industrial sectors, including aerospace, defence, automotive, oil and gas, nuclear, marine, medical, electronics, and industrial equipment. It is uniquely suited for applications such as functional coatings, repair, and additive manufacturing. Its low thermal impact ensures that components' original strength and durability are maintained. 🌍 Eco-Friendly and Efficient Cold spraying is environmentally friendly, uses less energy, and reduces waste, aligning with sustainable manufacturing practices.
