Designated for chemical and bio-measurement. Supporting the work of the Government Chemist. Measurement matters.
About us
Measurement matters As the UK’s National Measurement Laboratory, responsible for chemical and bio-measurement, we form part of the core measurement infrastructure for the UK. We hold two unique roles, funded by UK government: UK's Designated Institute for chemical and bio-measurement and UK Government Chemist. While everyone depends on robust, steadfast chemical and biological measurements – from reliable medical diagnostics to forensics and monitoring the safety of food and water – few people are aware of them. Our internationally recognised scientists develop the fundamental measurement science to support manufacture and trade, protect consumers, promote skills development and enhance quality of life. We partner with government, academia and industry to provide the expertise and knowledge to improve chemical and bio-measurements, resulting in reliable, trusted and proven answers to the most complex scientific issues. We play a leading role internationally to standardise measurements across the world. So that we can all trust food is correctly labelled with no hidden allergens and medicines heal without unexpected side effects. Through our research in advanced therapeutics, clinical diagnostics and safety and security, we provide unique measurement solutions to underpin some of the biggest challenges of our time, including neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, anti-microbial resistance, food safety and global terrorism. Our measurement research, calibration facilities, reference materials and training programmes are available to help unravel and solve the most complex global biological and chemical challenges.

Very pleased to see the importance of the metrology and standards training we developed for BBSRC to support the next generation of engineering biology researchers recognised by Lord Vallance of Balham in his recent appearance at the Lords Science and Technology Committee. For emerging sectors such as engineering biology to reach their full potential, it is essential that the principles of metrology are embedded across the community, and researchers and innovators have the skills they need to delivery more robust, reproducible science. #MeasurementMatters
Today, Tuesday 15 October, the Lords Science and Technology Committee spoke to science minister Lord Vallance of Balham about his responsibilities in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the committee’s inquiry into engineering biology. The committee asked Lord Vallance about the UK’s vaccine preparedness and the government’s industrial strategy, and heard his five priorities as science minister. 📺 Watch the session on YouTube https://lnkd.in/ewd-YUe4 📷 See more photos on Flickr https://lnkd.in/ecTB-HZS #HouseOfLords #Committee #Science #Technology

16th of October marks World Food Day 2024. Science and technology plays a vital role in ensuring food safety, security and authenticity. Here are some examples of how we are ensuring food safety, security and authenticity: Our dynamic portfolio of reference materials are supporting the food manufacturing industry to ensure their products meet safety standards. You can view our portfolio of food reference materials here- https://okt.to/0zIJGo Our work supports the Government Chemist statutory and advisory functions to protect consumers, provide a route of technical appeal for food businesses and provide advice to government, for example on innovative solutions to food sustainability. Find out more about the Government Chemist here- https://okt.to/Hxzjmv Finally, working in partnership with our stakeholders we are developing reliable methods to characterise nano- and micro-plastics in food and water to enable trace monitoring and mitigation measures around plastic pollution in our food chain. Find out more in our latest annual review- https://okt.to/ipTRQ2 From authenticity (https://okt.to/Cy9txo) to novel food and eco-friendly packaging our expertise ensures food safety and sustainability and customer trust and supports regulatory compliance for future needs. #WorldFoodDay #FoodSecurity #GovernmentChemist #SafeFood #Sustainability

We were delighted to welcome MP for Guildford, Zöe Franklin, to our new site at Guildford. We showcased to Zöe our roles as part of the National Laboratories at LGC, including our support of the Government Chemist function. We showed her around the site and shared some of the incredible science that will be moving into the Priestley Building at Guildford. Zöe commented: “It was great to see LGC's new site in Guildford and hear about the crucial work of the UK National Measurement Laboratory. I'm proud that Guildford has the local partnerships and talent available to enable us to make such a positive contribution to British and international science.” #ScienceforaSaferWorld #measurementmatters LGC

In light of recent reports of mustard products in the UK and Europe contaminated with peanuts, food safety and allergen management are more crucial than ever. For food manufacturers, ensuring accurate allergen detection is essential to protect consumers and maintain trust. At the NML, we provide two Quality Control Materials, produced under our ISO 9001 quality management system for peanut testing. LGCQC1020 is a peanut flour characterised for total nitrogen and water content and provides a calculated value for protein content. LGCQC101-KT is a kit consisting of two matrix materials; LGCQC1011, a chocolate mousse dessert confirmed to contain no peanut protein, to act as a negative control and LGCQC1012, a chocolate mousse dessert with a protein concentration of 10 mg/kg, to act as a positive control. Engineering biology has enormous potential to address societal challenges, drive economic growth, and increase national security, resilience and preparedness. UKRI has invested over £800 million in synthetic and engineering biology since 2007, positioning the UK as one of the world leaders in this field. The recent £125 million investments through the UKRI Technology Missions Fund (TMF) aim to unlock the potential of engineering biology across various applications, such as healthcare, environmental sustainability, and agriculture. Dr Thierry Le Goff represented the NML at the first ever UK Research and Innovation TMF community convening event last week in Cardiff and highlighted the crucial role of metrology and standardisation in bridging the gap between engineering biology fundamental research and its practical applications. He showcased the NML's recent achievements in standardization, bio-metrology, and training initiatives, designed to empower UK innovators to harness the full potential of engineering biology.
