The Muruntau Mine The Muruntau gold deposit in western Uzbekistan is one of the largest individual gold deposits worldwide with resources in excess of 5000 mt (metric tons) of gold. It was discovered in 1958 by Mordvintsev Y.N., Khamyshkin P.V. and Luk’yanov S.I. by verification of an arsenic geochemical anomaly (Kempe et al., 2016). The mine is owned and operated by Navoi Mining and Metallurgy Combinat (NGMK), a state-owned company in Uzbekistan. The Muruntau mine is located in the Qizilqum Desert of Uzbekistan. It is the world's largest open-pit gold mine, measuring about 4.3 km long, 3.2 km wide, and 650 m deep. It is one of the largest gold mines in the world, producing over 2 million ounces (56.7 tonnes) of gold per year. The mine has estimated gold reserves of 150 million ounces (4,819 tonnes), making it the largest gold deposit in Eurasia. In 2022, Muruntau became one of the world's top gold mining operations.
