For the Talon team, Indigenous People’s Day is a time for reflection, consideration and focus on how we can do better in the future. Reflection on the wrongs of the past, doing the work to understand tribal history and context in the areas where we operate and finally, focus on new ways to do better in the future. If we can find new ways to honor the past through respect, empowerment, and meaningful participation, we hope that this day can also be more of a celebration for future generations...   Take a moment to learn today: Why Treaties Matter | NPR (youtube.com) https://lnkd.in/gWyumb5r

Important reporting from Benar News on China-South Project's latest report on the Indonesian sector.   "Indonesia’s booming nickel industry, which is fueled by massive Chinese investments, is marred by widespread corruption and illegal mining activities, both of which are closely linked to environmental damage”   Yet another report on Indonesia's nickel sector being dominated by Chinese firms that don’t play by the same rules or have the same values.    At Talon, we’re committed to doing better right here in the U.S., where we can produce critical minerals for domestic manufacturing at high standards. https://lnkd.in/gUBRHXfx

What is the Circular Economy?   Bloomberg outlines what a circular economy is, and how it can support the energy transition.    A Circular Economy is a sustainable economic model focused on reducing waste by recycling, reusing, and extending the life of products. Unlike the traditional linear economy (take, make, dispose), it aims to keep materials in use, reducing the need for new resources and lowering environmental impact.   In the energy transition, a circular economy helps recycle critical minerals used in batteries, like cobalt and nickel, ensuring sustainable supply chains. Companies like Talon are advancing this by partnering with Circulor to ensure that extracted minerals are recyclable and traceable, supporting cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions. https://lnkd.in/gwwSfkjE

📢 Recap: Biden-Harris Administration Boosts Critical Mineral Supply Chains 📢 The Biden-Harris Administration has taken significant steps to secure the U.S. supply chain for critical minerals, which are vital for technologies like electric vehicles (EVs), clean energy systems, and defense equipment. Since taking office, the Administration has mobilized over $120 billion in investments aimed at strengthening domestic mining, processing, and battery manufacturing. Some key highlights: •$3 billion has been allocated across 25 projects to support battery production, recycling, and manufacturing of key components. •The U.S. is now on track to produce enough batteries to power 10 million EVs by 2030. •Major investments in U.S. lithium processing are set to meet more than 20% of global demand outside China by 2030. •Over 250,000 new American energy jobs have been created, with clean energy jobs growing twice as fast as others in the sector. These efforts are reducing dependence on foreign supply chains, boosting U.S. manufacturing, and creating thousands of high-quality jobs. 🇺🇸🔋⚡ #SupplyChains #EnergySecurity #CriticalMinerals #CleanEnergy https://lnkd.in/ghjjb5Pa

China Broke the Critical Mineral Market Bloomberg’s Javier Blas nails it: "China’s absolute dominance of critical minerals pose a clear and persistent danger to the future production of the batteries needed to wean the world off fossil fuels" China's monopolistic tendencies to support its domestic industrial base prevents market-based competition and renders western supply chains with few alternatives. "More than ever, China dominates production of cobalt and lithium, reinforcing its enormous influence on the batteries essential for electric vehicles and other gadgets. Worse, prices have fallen so low that non-Chinese miners would struggle to make a profit, reducing the incentive for Western investors to build their own sources." https://lnkd.in/ehw2ebaj

🚨 The U.S. government is raising alarms about forced labor in Indonesia’s nickel mines—a key resource for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and clean energy tech. Key takeaways from the article in Asia Times:   - Indonesia holds nearly 25% of the world’s nickel, but its industry is plagued by labor abuses, environmental destruction, and heavy Chinese investment. This threatens to undermine the clean energy transition. - Western companies must rethink sourcing strategies. BASF recently withdrew from a $2.6B nickel refinery project in Indonesia, citing market dynamics but also responding to environmental and human rights concerns. - Short-term savings on Indonesian nickel come with long-term reputational risks. U.S. companies must prioritize ethical sourcing and sustainable supply chains to align with growing regulatory scrutiny and consumer expectations. In contrast, our team at Talon is committed to: - Utilizing organized labor for our future project construction and operations through out partnerships with United Steelworkers (USW), MN Building Trades and ND Building Trades - Designing operations focused on safety for both people and the environment - Supporting our domestic supply chains by supplying nickel for US batteries With challenges come opportunities. Talon is excited to be working to support the U.S. goals for domestic and sustainable nickel supply chains. #wecandothis https://lnkd.in/dAeg2VMg

“Right now, we are just focused on understanding what is [or is not] in the ground, and Talon is committed to doing that in a way that respects the role of KBIC as a tribal sovereign government with special interests in their member’s treaty rights to hunt, fish and gather in the region where our exploration will take place,” – Todd Malan, Talon’s Chief External Affairs Officer and Head of Climate Strategy.   Great article from Hannah Northey in E&E News digging deeper into Talon’s exploration efforts in Michigan. Our team at Talon is trying to do mineral exploration in a different way, and we're excited to continue the work of discovering and developing critical minerals like nickel for our U.S. battery supply chains. #wecandothis https://lnkd.in/giDzVwJZ

🚨 Nickel is playing a huge role in the clean energy transition! Here's why:   🔋 Key to Batteries: Nickel's energy density helps power electric vehicles (EVs) and clean energy storage. Batteries are expected to overtake steelmaking as the largest nickel user by 2040! ♻️ Sustainability: Though vital to renewable tech, nickel mining has a history of unsustainable practices. The shift toward sustainable nickel mining is underway with new innovations in mining technology. 🌍 Domestic vs. Imports: The U.S. depends on imports for over half its nickel. Efforts to bolster domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign entities, especially Russia and China, are crucial for energy security. 🔄 Recycling Efforts: Nickel recycling is on the rise, offering a path to sustainability. Advanced recycling tech promises to recover more critical minerals, reducing carbon emissions and waste. 💡 Future Growth: By 2050, demand for nickel could skyrocket from less than 1M tons to as much as 5M tons, driven by EVs, renewable energy, and defense.   #Nickel #CleanEnergy #EVs #Sustainability #EnergyTransition https://lnkd.in/gh-wn_VF

More Nickel in the USA! So excited for our friends at Eagle Mine and Revex Technologies for being selected for the second round of funding for secure domestic battery mineral supply chains from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)! This is the same program that Talon was awarded $115m grant funding for the Battery Mineral Processing Facility in Mercer County, ND. Revex/Eagle’s grant is for $145m for three plants in Marquette County, Michigan that will extract more nickel and other critical minerals from Eagle’s mine waste and recycled battery material. Talon is exploring for more nickel in the Marquette area and it is so great to see the Upper Peninsula leading in producing nickel for a secure supply chain of nickel produced at high standards. #wecandothis #BuyAmerican #NickelintheUSA https://lnkd.in/gHgrFMdc
