Post 1 of 2: The Ronnie Herndon. Photos of our completed Alberta Alive projects are finally in, and we couldn’t be more pleased with how these quality, urban infill buildings turned out! It was a huge team effort to design and build both buildings simultaneously on separate blocks. Both sites are extremely small, and required both the design and construction teams to quite literally utilize every square inch available. We’re grateful for our collaboration with Self Enhancement, Inc., Community Development Partners, Colas Construction, and all the other members of the design and construction team. We are excited to announce that Alberta Alive has been recognized as a Daily Journal of Commerce Oregon 2024 Top Project! The Ronnie Herndon and Paul & Geneva Knauls Buildings mark the first milestone in the Alberta Alive vision. These buildings provide 52 affordable housing units with supportive services for underserved individuals and families, including Veterans. This project, a collaboration with Self Enhancement, Inc., aims to celebrate and strengthen Portland’s historically Black N/NE neighborhoods. SEI is a pillar in the North Portland community and one of the city’s leading multi-service organizations. SEI provides thousands of African American youth, families, and adults with academic support and comprehensive wraparound services. As the Alberta Alive co-developer and lead resident services provider, their contributions have been invaluable. A big thank you to our project team: SEI, Colas Construction, Access Architecture, and Do Good Multnomah. This achievement wouldn't have been possible without you!

Construction is quickly progressing at our new affordable housing development with the Kelso Housing Authority! When complete, it will be the densest affordable housing development in Kelso. Excellent work out on site by TEAM Construction LLC. Great project management by Wenaha Group and Vancouver Housing Authority rounds out this collaborative OAC team!

Access is grateful to have been a part of this significant project! We believe one of our greatest responsibilities as architects is to serve as a conduit for community needs and voices, and to manifest them into a built environment that is equitable, restorative, and inclusive. The Alberta Alive buildings are a beautiful representation of this, and a testament to what can be achieved when the whole project team is in alignment. Well done team!
This week, we were honored to celebrate the Alberta Alive Naming Dedication, recognizing the remarkable contributions of Mr. Ronnie Herndon and Mr. Paul Knauls within the community. Their unwavering dedication and passion have touched countless lives, making a lasting impact. The project team commemorated their legacy by naming the first two Alberta Alive buildings in their honor. The speaking program featured Mr. Tony Hopson Sr., Nancy Harris Alexander, THRP, Mr. Ronnie Herndon, Mr. Paul Knauls, and Dr. S. Renee Mitchell. The Ronnie Herndon Building offers 21 units of affordable housing tailored to residents earning 30% and 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Comprising a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, this project prioritizes family housing, with 90% of the units being two- or three-bedrooms. The Paul & Geneva Knauls Building provides 31 units, offering a combination of studios and one-bedrooms. The Knauls Building also includes 25 VASH housing voucher units and wraparound case management services. The Alberta Alive initiative represents a beacon of celebration and empowerment in Portland's historically Black North/Northeast neighborhoods. By providing affordable housing, culturally responsive support services, and fostering a shared sense of community, the Ronnie Herndon and Paul & Geneva Knauls Buildings, situated just two blocks apart on NE Alberta, mark the inaugural properties under the Alberta Alive umbrella. The shared Alberta Alive vision is a collaboration with CDP and Self Enhancement, Inc. We are deeply grateful for our partnership with SEI, who we’ve collaborated with every step of the way. SEI's deep and genuine connections within the communities they serve that make our partnership particularly special. Did you know the oldest Black church (continuously running congregation) north of San Francisco is located in Portland, OR? Known as First A.M.E. (African Methodist Episcopal) Zion Church, it was established in 1862, just three years after Oregon became a state. 1862 was also the year the Oregon Legislature passed a law banning interracial marriage, and instituted a $5 annual tax on Blacks, Chinese, Hawaiians (Kanakas), and Mulattos (an archaic term referring to people of mixed racial/ethnic heritage). Those unable to pay had to perform road maintenance. Since its founding in 1862, First A.M.E. Zion Church has been at the forefront in the fight for equal rights, including spearheading one of Oregon’s first organized civil rights protests.
