Gabriella M. Wong, Founder & CEO of accesSOS, signs in her native language #ASL about the first ever Google Impact summit. It's touching to see her sign for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community as we learn more about what Google can do to support nonprofits like accesSOS. accesSOS is driven by the mission to ensure that no other person faces dangerous barriers to getting help in a medical emergency, like her father, who almost died due to inequitable access. When he experienced the pain from a gallbladder rupture, he texted his daughter Gabriella to call 911 for him, but she wasn't near her phone at the time. Excited to share that the accesSOS team, including our UX Researcher Kahlid Walker and Engineering Lead Phaneendra Amruthur Ravi, connected with the Deaf community at Vallejo Deaf Church to learn firsthand about their experiences through the American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. We conducted an insightful user testing session to further improve the accesSOS app for accessing emergency services. A huge thank you to our donors for making this session possible! 🙏 Want to see more user sessions? Visit our website at accesSOS.io and consider donating and signing up for the next session: https://lnkd.in/gKEzfG7t #911access #TechForGood #DeafCommunity #AccessibilityMatters #InclusiveTech #CommunityFirst [Transcript: Kal: Are you guys ready for the next scenario? So, in this next scenario, we will use the app to report a situation where you are in a car accident near the Vallejo ferry terminal, and your back is badly injured. Same as before. You will use the app to report this emergency, and then after, we'll go over what it looks like. And then I have an address that I would like to see if you can search for the Vallejo ferry terminal in the address. Chris with the ASL interpreter: "For me, I use GPS called 'Waze,' I would type where I'm going to show recommendations for addresses on there. That would help me as well because I can click on it and then I can look and see the name of the streets that are nearby and the house number."]

Today, the FCC adopted a new framework to facilitate the transition to Next Generation 911! We believe this decision will greatly improve access for our community. As NENA: The 9-1-1 Association CEO Brian Fontes said, “This order not only provides a balanced and sensible framework for 9-1-1 authorities and OSPs to move forward together to deploy NG9-1-1 nationwide, but also improves 9-1-1 service for everyone, especially those who depend on inclusive services, like deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals.” A big thank you to NENA: The 9-1-1 Association, National Association of State 911 Administrators (NASNA), and many others for their work in making this possible!
