We believe in making a positive impact beyond the building envelope. That’s why we were thrilled to have two of our dedicated employees, Rob Klein and Stephen Cooper, volunteer their time for this year’s #AECCaresProjectDC Day of Service. Our team, along with architects, contractors, partners, sponsors, donors, and volunteers, went above and beyond to transform Sasha Bruce Youthwork’s Residential Empowerment Adolescent Community Home (REACH) in Washington, D.C.’s historic Barracks Row. REACH provides a safe, community-based residential program for pre-adjudicated young men ages 12-17, referred by the D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services. We are also excited to announce that, thanks to the popularity of our Learning Lounge at AIA24, we have reached our goal of donating $5,000 to AEC Cares. This donation will support Sasha Bruce Youthwork's mission to better support the boys who call REACH home. Last Wednesday, June 5th, ConstructConnect joined forces with members of the AEC community in renovating Sasha Bruce Youthwork's REACH (Residential Empowerment Adolescent Community Home) for pre-adjudicated teens. Thanks to the tremendous support from our construction partner, The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company plus their amazing network of subcontractors. This AEC Cares Day of Service was fuelled by our commitment to sustainability and the circularity principal of reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling materials and products and furnishings. Personally, it was a very rewarding experience for me to lead and participate among a group of talented, caring, and enthusiastic colleagues, generous sponsors, energetic volunteers and incredibly creative pro bono design team members. We all share a desire to make the built environment better for everyone resulting in this community project becoming an extremely impactful one! This home supports youth ages 12-17, providing counseling, education, and life skills coaching. SBY is a leading provider of services to youth in Washington, D.C., with 15 safe homes across the area. We are excited to highlight our key sustainability efforts for this year’s #AECCaresProjectDC. Our renovation of the Sasha Bruce Youthwork REACH property incorporates sustainably sourced building products, including repurposed furniture from ConstructConnect, overstock flooring from Spartan Surfaces, other home furnishings provided by Community Forklift, low-VOC paint provided by PPG, and products with low embedded carbon count like tiles donated by CCE Specialties, Inc. These initiatives showcase the importance of reusing materials and reducing waste, helping create a more environmentally friendly project.
