🔊 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐓𝐂 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭! Recent geopolitical shifts have increased instability and unpredictability in international trade. While #economic and #strategic risks dominate the EU agenda, the #environmental impacts of supply chain decisions deserve equal attention. Building on a 2023 pilot study, this report assesses the environmental implications of supply chain disruptions for two materials of strategic importance: #aluminium and #lithium. The report finds that shifting aluminium supply to domestic EU sources and enhancing recycling can significantly reduce environmental impacts. For lithium, short-term alternatives are complex, but medium- and long-term measures could prevent environmental impacts by ramping up EU #recycling and #refining. The report was produced in the context of the European Topic Centre on Circular Economy and Resource Use of the European Environment Agency. Our Adrien Specker, Shahrzad Manoochehri and Robin S. Smith Gilli co-authored it together with Giovanni Marin, Roberto Zoboli, Philip Nuss, Elina Pohjalainen and Peder Jensen. 👉 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/e4sjee5R

How can reliable data drive sustainability in raw materials value chains? We had the pleasure to sit down with Simone Manfredi, #WRF25 Scientific Committee Member and Coordinator of the 𝐑𝐚𝐰 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 (RMIS) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), to explore this European knowledge hub for sustainable raw materials. During our conversation, Simone walks us through how RMIS supports evidence-based policymaking by offering comprehensive #data and #foresight on raw material flows, supply chains, environmental and social impacts, and criticality assessment. If you work in the areas of raw materials, responsible sourcing and policymaking, this is definitely a great knowledge hub to make use of! 👇 Read the full interview

This week the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA), our partners on the Responsible Mining Index project, are in the field in #Zimbabwe connecting with local #communities that are impacted by mining in their close proximity. The goal is to constructively engage with the residents to hear the stories on what life is like on the ground. The community is surveyed for their perceptions on #social and #environmental issues related to the mine and mining company with which they co-exist. This anonymous information will then be used as input for a stakeholder engagement event and #dialogue between the community, local representatives, and the mining company. Such work can empower the communities to proactively use their voice in identifying specific concerns and assist the mining company in effectively responding to community needs. #ResponsibleMining #RMI
