OPAN has welcomed the Senate Report on the Aged Care Bill 2024. 'We have long called for an Act that focuses on the rights, safety, health and wellbeing of older people. This Bill provides those building blocks,' OPAN CEO Craig Gear said. We would like to thank our network member advocates and National Older Persons Reference Group members who gave evidence at the hearing. Peter Willcocks a sad day indeed..
ROGOV MKII A SAD DAY FOR TRUTH AND CARING Utterly devastated that our government and our representatives have not listened to their hearts and to the people that aged care is all about. This report is just another sell off sanctifying the spin provided by those who will profit from treating our elders and people with disability as commodities for profit. The following report implies that this act support the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. This Act does not do that and will lead to further hardship and abuse but this time we will not have the support of the courts and tribunals. The Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee Aged Care Bill 2024 [Provisions] Just published REPORT 4 Nov 2024 Page 101 [rule 101 eh] Urgent and timely reform 3.195 The committee is of the view that the bill meaningfully responds to the findings of the Aged Care Royal Commission, and acknowledges that the majority of witnesses, including advocates, providers and aged care experts, strongly support the bill’s passage. Many explicitly stated that the bill must be passed by the end of the year to ensure a timely transition process. 3.196 The committee strongly encourages the government to consider the issues raised by witnesses and submitters detailed above in any further development of the bill and the Aged Care Rules, but, notwithstanding this, believes that the bill must be passed urgently. 3.197 Older Australians and their families simply cannot wait any longer for a better and safer system. The bill will ensure that older people are placed at the centre of aged care for current and future generations to come. Recommendation 1 3.198 The committee recommends that the bill be passed. https://lnkd.in/gwwsbE7c

The Senate committee reviewing the legislation for a new Aged Care Act has recommended the bill be passed, but the coalition senators have called for amendments. Elsewhere among the coalition’s 32 recommendations: - a review of the Support at Home commencement date - a clear transition path - greater flexibility in use of care minutes - removal of supporter provisions to allow additional time for consultation - transition arrangements - further consultation on care management fee caps Australian Ageing Agenda Aged & Community Care Providers Association COTA Australia Invox Catholic Health Australia Older Persons Advocacy Network #agedcare #agedcarenews #agedcareaustralia #agedcarereform
I participated last week and commend Vida KardanMoghaddam for being well organised with some great questions.
Ph.D. Candidate, Griffith University Aged Care Advocate| Health Policy Fellow| Public Health Researcher
Do you work in the residential aged care sector or have a family member living in a residential aged care home? If so, I invite you to participate in my PhD research at Griffith University, titled "The Cause and Impact of Missed Care in Australian Residential Aged Care: Resident, Carer, Health Professional, and Healthcare Leader Experiences." If you are a resident or have a loved one in aged care, a personal carer, a health professional, or an aged care leader with experience in Residential Aged Care Facilities, your insights would be invaluable to this study. The research focuses on your experiences and perspectives regarding missed care, defined as any aspect of required care that is omitted (either partially or entirely) or delayed. This includes clinical, emotional, and administrative nursing care and is recognized as a significant factor affecting the quality of care. All contributions will be de-identified and treated with strict confidentiality. Participation involves an interview at a time and place that suits you. This study has received ethical approval (GU HREC 2024/158) from the Griffith University Human Ethics Committee. If you're interested in participating or want more information, please: Contact me at Vida.kardanmoghaddam@griffithuni.edu.au Follow the link: https://lnkd.in/gyqnn_TE Scan the QR code in the picture I would also appreciate it if you could share this invitation with others who might be interested. Thank you for considering this opportunity to contribute to important research in aged care. Best regards, Vida Kardan Moghaddam PhD Candidate, Griffith University
Aged Care Quality Bulletin #70
Thank you for sharing Dr Cecilia Chan This may be very triggering for some, but the evidence needs to be seen. We cannot keep ignoring abuse and neglect in Residential Aged Care Facilities- we need to hold Providers to account! Criminal charges have been removed from the new Aged Care Act - will the deterrents be strong enough ? I’m not so sure..
This is a painful truth to share but I feel that I must. I visited a friend in a nursing home recently. This lady sitting next to my friend was physically restrained ( both arms & legs). She was attempting to communicate but was ignored. She was not the only resident there who was restrained. I feel my heart aching with so much pain for us all , yet I also feel helpless as there is very little I can do. So I thought I will share this painful reality in this platform to seek some comfort. ❤️
Have you read the Open Letter? Thoughts? Improving Support at Home would certainly enable people to remain in their own homes longer..
Are we truly giving older people a choice to stay at home or to enter residential care? Are we giving them choice about how much care management they need? The Government’s Support at Home Program is an improvement on the Home Care Package Program it will replace in July next year. But it falls short of what the Aged Care Royal Commission recommended. Support Invox as we seek a better deal for older people and for a sustainable home care sector. Roland Naufal, Matt Hart, Anna Millicer
Sharing this here because Mum’s 6 monthly dose of Prolia (Denosumab) was delayed , due to miscommunication between Doctor and Staff during her 15 month stay in a Residential Aged Care Facility. As a result , Mum suffered Spontaneous vertebral fractures and multiple rib fractures. Her last months were total agony. This is one of the reasons we are lobbying for a better qualified workforce in our failing Aged Care system, to avoid these kind of issues
