Our CEO Arnaud Brohe spoke earlier this week with laurent lambrecht, a journalist at La Libre (Brussels based newspaper). Some extracts from an interview where they discussed among others greenwashing, the EU CSRD and the role of AI in climate action: Despite a serious accident, which reduced his mobility, Arnaud Brohé is leading Agendi a company that now has about forty employees. (…) Recently, several global companies have reduced their climate targets. This is notably the case of the oil company BP and the consumer products giant Unilever. However, these two companies were considered to be climate leaders in their industry. Does this mean that companies are less concerned about the climate than before? Not necessarily, says Arnaud Brohé, who follows this matter very closely. "Until very recently, companies' decarbonization plans were carried out on a voluntary basis," he explains. These plans, and sustainability reports, were often marketing tools. Companies published objectives, sometimes very ambitious, that they could not really achieve." However, according to this expert, the EU CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) has changed everything. This directive mandates around 50,000 European and non-European companies to publish a report detailing their environmental, social and human rights impact. The objective is to publish comparable and audited information. This should allow the public, journalists and NGOs to compare companies. (…) According to Arnaud Brohé, this directive has already pushed companies to be more realistic in their decarbonization plans.   Among the companies that have seen their CO2 emissions increase, there are of course the giants of artificial intelligence (AI). As a reminder, AI consumes a lot of electricity to train. But the tech giants generally respond that solutions, generated by AI, could reduce CO2 emissions. What does Arnaud Brohé think? "I'm skeptical," he replies. Of course, AI can help in many fields such as medicine, research, batteries... But let's not forget the rebound effect, which implies that an improvement in efficiency does not necessarily lead to a decrease in consumption. (...)   Regarding the fight against global warming, this expert is not particularly optimistic. "We will probably succeed in reducing our CO2 emissions and perhaps being neutral by 2100," he says. But, in the meantime, we are going to go through a lot of human suffering. https://lnkd.in/eANHhr47

On September 27, California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, signed into law Senate Bill 219 (SB 219), reinforcing California’s leadership in transitioning to a low carbon economy. This update provides the next step toward final reporting guidelines and disclosure processes for California’s new climate laws. Key points here: ⌛ Extended rules timeline: CARB now has until July 1, 2025, to establish final regulations (previously January 2025). ❗ Maintained reporting deadlines: SB 219 did not include Governor Newsom’s proposed two-year delay in reporting for SB253 and SB261. Companies must still report Scopes 1 and 2 emissions and a TCFD-aligned report starting in 2026. 3️⃣ Updated Scope 3 expectations: The only aspect of the reporting requirements with an updated implementation timeline is the disclosure of Scope 3 emissions. Instead of the previous, 180-day fixed period after Scope 1 and 2 reporting initially proposed, reporting is intended to be required from 2027 at a schedule specified by CARB. 📚 Simplified reporting: Companies can now consolidate their emissions reports at the parent level, streamlining disclosures. What does this mean for California businesses? 🔎 Heightened transparency: Companies must be prepared to show progress on their climate commitments through enhanced disclosures. 💡 Opportunities for innovation: This legislation can drive innovation and investment in sustainable practices to reduce emissions. Companies that embrace sustainability can gain a competitive edge in the market. Our team can assist in determining whether your organization is subject to these regulations and help you build a robust sustainability strategy and ensure compliance. Reach out to Natalia Pascual, and Samantha Weinberg in our West Coast team! #SB219 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #CaliforniaBusiness #EnvironmentalCompliance

🌍 Agendi x Fordham Gabelli School of Business - Responsible Business Center 🌿 This #NYClimateWeek, we hosted an enlightening panel discussion on how California and EU laws are shaping climate action in corporate America. Here are some take-aways: 🔍 The increasing complexity of climate disclosure regulations (e.g., CSRD, SEC) is challenging companies to adapt their strategies. Legal and finance teams, among other internal and external stakeholders, must now play an integral role in meeting these evolving demands and adopt a more rigorous, data-driven approach. 🌟 While meeting regulatory requirements is essential, they can also drive innovation, bolster brand reputation, and build long-term resilience against climate risks. It is a chance for any company to adopt a "climate first but not climate-only" approach to sustainability and critically evaluate their relationship with/contributions to environmental and social issues. ⚡ Our panel highlighted the importance of cross-functional collaboration, technology adoption, and stakeholder engagement. A critical first step? Conducting a materiality assessment to define risks and opportunities—it’s a process that takes time but is vital for long-term success. By understanding the regulatory landscape and taking proactive steps, companies can drive positive change towards a more resilient and sustainable world. A huge thank you to our distinguished panelists: Barbara Marie Porco, Natalie Runyon, Helene Banks, Arnaud Brohe and moderator Colleen Cochran. And a big shout out to our partners at Fordham Responsible Business Center for their support and commitment to advancing climate action and sustainability. #ClimateAction #Sustainability #CorporateResponsibility #NYClimateWeek2024 #ESG

The Agendi team was thrilled to attend the inaugural LA Climate Week, where sustainability professionals, impact investors, policymakers, and climate activists gathered across Los Angeles County. From Santa Monica Beach to the Hollywood Hills, we explored innovative solutions to today’s most pressing sustainability challenges. Los Angeles is emerging as a hub for sustainability across multiple sectors. The city's “Silicon Beach” startup scene is driving climate innovation and its influence on food, fashion, entertainment, media, and sports positions LA as a key player in building resilient systems across industries. Through its Green New Deal, Los Angeles has committed to electrifying its public transit system by 2030, procure 100% renewable energy by 2045, and, by 2050, achieve net zero and create 400,000 green jobs. A standout session for us was the Climate Capital Panel hosted by The Collidescope Foundation at Expert Dojo. The event offered fresh insights into increasing investment in #climatetech startups. At Patagonia’s Santa Monica store, we were facinated by Ravyn Williams, PA-C talk about the links between cardiovascular health and air and microplastic pollution. Her session underscored that the climate crisis is also a public health crisis. We’re energized by the ideas and collaborations we witnessed at LA Climate Week and look forward to staying engaged with the innovative solutions emerging from Southern California. But first... we are counting down to #NYClimateWeek next week! #LAClimateWeek #ClimateAction #Sustainability #LosAngeles

With Climate Week NYC approaching, it's timely to emphasize the connection between nature and climate. Climate is one of the 9 planetary boundaries and crossing these tresholds poses significant risks not only to our survival but also the foundation of global businesses and economies. According to the World Economic Forum. over half of the world’s GDP depends on nature, impacting industries far beyond agriculture, including pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, real estate, and mining.  At Agendi, we are committed to helping companies understand and measure their impacts and dependencies on nature using frameworks like Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), and support setting Science-Based Targets for Nature through Science Based Targets Network. In collaboration with GSMA for IDB Invest, we co-authored a report that explores technologies and best practices to enhance natural resource management for the conservation and regeneration of the Amazon region. The report highlights three case studies of organizations using digital technologies to preserve and restore this invaluable ecosystem - an approach critical for biodiversity preservation and climate resilience. Discover more about our findings and solutions in the report (available in English and Spanish): "Exploring the Case for Digitalizing Natural Resource Management in the Amazon" Follow link here➡ https://lnkd.in/e3G-fNVJ #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #Sustainablility
