🌳🌾 AGROMIX Project have released a new study by Colin Tosh, Tom Staton, Ambrogio Costanzo & Will Simonson on "Biotic Stress and Yield Stability in English Organic Silvoarable Agroforestry." 🌱 🦋🌾The research delves into how in-field trees interact with crops, not just biophysically, but through biotic interactions with pests, diseases, and beneficial organisms. 🌿 The model used in the research emphasises the importance of shifting focus to the role of disease and weeds in #agroecosystems. 📈Their interactions with biotic elements offer a nuanced effect on yield dynamics 🌾The suggested simplified model offers actionable insights for decision-making in #agroforestry management 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ddjasX_k

Agroforestry is a very good alternative to modern monocultures, ReForest aims to facilitate its adoption in Europe
About us
REFOREST (Agroforestry at the forefront of farming sustainability in multifunctional landscapes in Europe), a Horizon Europe project funded under EU’s Land, ocean and water for climate Action, aims to promote agroforestry as a land use type allowing food production while maintaining ecological sustainability. The principles underlying REFOREST are those of innovation, knowledge exchange and creating novel solutions to empower farmers in Europe and associated countries to deliver on multiple objectives: food production, carbon capture, and biodiversity development. Bringing together 14 partners from 10 European countries with multidisciplinary expertise, REFOREST has the fundamental aim to use existing knowledge of temperate agroforestry systems to co-create solutions to key barriers that hinder wider adoption of this land use type by farmers in the EU and associated countries. The strategic objective is to enhance agroforestry and the sustainability of food production by internalising the value of carbon and biodiversity in farming business models. The project will use an open science approach to represent the real-world ecological, economic and social potential and limitations of agroforestry within decision-making, verification, and financial support tools.

It was a pleasure to represent Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association - EMEA in this panel and share insights from our recent work for ReForest. I know this is a long learning road but the more I get into it, the more I am convinced that #Agroforestry (AF) is crucial for proposing a possible link between: - Mitigating climate change -> by reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the achievement of urgent Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); - Enhancing food security -> by promoting resilient agricultural systems that stabilize food prices and safeguard supply chains; - Improving the livelihoods of local communities and competitiveness of regenerative farmers -> by encouraging sustainable land-use practices that boost productivity, diversify income streams, and strengthen the long-term stability of regional farms. As inconceivable as this “triple win scenario” may seem— especially in the context of extreme climate disasters, ongoing geopolitical conflicts, and widespread distrust in multilateral institutions due to political frictions and polarization, for example —there are still reasons to believe we can shift towards a more equitable, low-carbon and climate-resilient, and nature-positive future. The event was a rich opportunity to learn directly from researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. I was able to share our research efforts in mapping and monitoring the #policy landscape for agroforestry across the EU, as well as our work in designing innovative #financing schemes aimed at maximizing the uptake of AF, improving stakeholder welfare, and creating numerous positive spillover effects to society. One promising approach is the integration of innovative and blended public-private partnerships (PPPs), where member states, developing banks, and the private sector play a key role in facilitating access to capital for agroforestry projects. However, significant challenges remain. Now, the central question is how to effectively integrate the co-benefits of regenerative agriculture—such as #carbon sequestration, #biodiversity enhancement, #soil regeneration, and #water retention—into the financial #valuation of agroforestry projects. 🌿We believe that continuous engagement with stakeholders and effectively communicating the benefits of #agroforestry are crucial for achieving broader support. 🌱 Recently, our partners Simon Swatek, representing ReForest, and Marcos Jiménez Martínez from #ABCDR, participated in meeting of the Agroforestry and Agricultural Woody Structures Working Group, part of the Small Farmers Association (#AbL) in Germany. 🌐The virtual event brought together #AbL members and experts from diverse sectors, including practical farming 🚜, arboriculture 🌳, nature conservation 🌾, and agricultural research 📚. 📊🌳 While #ABCDR highlights the biophysical potential of trees in agriculture as carbon sinks, ReForest focuses on various paths to foster #agroforestry adoption across Europe and ways to overcome existing barriers. 🌍During this engaging session, Simon and Marcos introduced ReForest and #ABCDR projects. Both projects take a #holisticapproach, using decision analysis 🔍 and probabilistic modeling 📊 to shape the future of #sustainablefarming. 🌿💡The event participants gained valuable insights into holistic systems analysis, decision-focused research, and the power of expert knowledge in quantitatively assessing the productivity of agroforestry systems. 💚🤝 We are incredibly grateful to the #AbL for this opportunity to engage with a wide range of German agroforestry stakeholders, especially smallholder farmers 🌾—key players in the transformative shift toward sustainable agriculture. ✨ #Agroforestry #SustainableAgriculture #ReForest #ResearchCollaboration #ClimateAction #Agroecology #HorizonEurope #Synergies
