Strategy | Program Management | Aerospace

My team at AIAA thinks a lot about "stochastic progress" and the Institute's responsibility to collaborate with our members in developing and communicating technical requirements and standards for aerospace innovation. Matthew Clarke from The Grainger College of Engineering led a dynamic discussion about the development of sustainable aircraft technology at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Sustainable Aviation conference on behalf of the Institute, and we'll continue the conversation this summer at AVIATION! AIAA's inaugural Sustainable Aviation Workshop will take place on Monday, July 29th at the 2024 AVIATION Forum. Aerospace Engineering Professor at UIUC | Forbes 30 Under 30 | Postdoc at MIT | Ph.D. from Stanford Aero/Astro

As the title fittingly suggests, “We Need Everyone on Board To Rapidly Decarbonize Aviation”. I want to thank the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for organizing this event where we (literally) put pen on paper to draft targets that the community must achieve to meet our bold goals of Net Zero emissions by 2050. Having panels is simply not enough; we need to get scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders in one room to hash out a path forward. Some of the high-level takeaways:  1. Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Supply Chains Must Be Systematically Cultivated 2. Electric Aircraft: Certification and Testing Is Critical for Components and Charging Infrastructure 3. Airports: Planners Must Align Accessibility and Mobility Goals With Revenue Generation 4. Energy Infrastructure: Industry Needs Detailed Energy Road Maps That Are Broadly Applicable to Airports of All Size You can read more here https://lnkd.in/gPihME-b.  A summary from the Aircraft Technology discussion which I led can be found here https://lnkd.in/g7AtEcdr  #ChangeMakers #NREL #Sustainable #Aviation

NASA ARC Intern | Mechanical Engineering Student & Researcher at Stony Brook University | Women In Science & Engineering Honors | AIAA SBU President | SHPE | NASA L’SPACE MCA 2022 | AIAA AVIATION Diversity Scholar 2023 |

About a month ago, I graduated from Stony Brook University with my Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Health, Medicine, and Society under the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Honors Program. My time at Stony Brook was memorable to say the least; my peers and the faculty had a lifelong impact on me. Throughout my time in college, my peers knew me for always being busy working on something: I often had 3 jobs taking over 20 credits a semester while I was president of AIAA, on the executive board of SHPE, as well as mentoring 2 different groups of students. With graduation, my time as President of the AIAA Student Branch at Stony Brook University has come to an end. I served as President for 2 years with an absolutely amazing team right beside me for both. We accomplished so much this year, including qualifying to launch in Alabama for the NASA USLI competition, having over 100 students attend our Careers in Aerospace Panel, and increasing our general body total membership from 4 when I was elected in 2022 to 205 this past May. We painted a rock within the engineering quad and organized several collaborative events for the benefit of the entire college of engineering. As an organization, we were honored to receive two awards and a recognition from the Stony Brook University College of Engineering and Applied Sciences: Most Outstanding Event for our Careers in Aerospace Panel, Most Outstanding Project for our NASA Student Launch Team, and Outstanding Organization Recognition. Our executive board expanded to 9 people this year, including Shivani Shastri, Raees Bacchus, Alan John George, Anastasia Stankevych, Joseph Ortiz More, William Wells, Abraham Mendoza, and Maximilian Blakely. I am so proud of you all and I hope to work with you again in the future! I am also honored to have received the Best Student Leader Award from the College of Engineering. I want to thank Mike, Todd, Deb, Courtney and the rest of the CEAS and Career Center staff for all they’ve contributed to my journey as President and bringing AIAA to the position within the college that it currently stands. Additionally, during graduation I was selected to serve as the banner bearer for the department of Mechanical Engineering as well as one of the student speakers at the Mechanical Engineering Departmental Graduation. Thank you to Amanda Flanagan, Austin Giordano, and the whole MEC department for contributing to my education and supporting my crazy ideas for AIAA. I want to conclude by thanking you all: fellow students, faculty, staff, professionals, and family for supporting me and AIAA on this journey the past few years. Congratulations to my fellow graduates and student leaders for all you have accomplished!

Visits to our Corporate Members’ labs and offices are a huge highlight for us at #AIAA. We enjoyed our time this week at General Atomics, especially AIAA CEO Dan Dumbacher's meeting with Dr. Vivek Lall, Chief Executive, General Atomics Global Corporation. We saw the reaction chamber of the DIII-D, an experimental tokamak fusion reactor operated by General Atomics in San Diego, which has been used in research since it was completed in the late 1980s. We learned that the characteristic torus-shaped chamber is clad with graphite to help withstand the extreme heat. Thank you for such a stimulating learning experience along with an energizing idea exchange. #AIAA

Co-President at Sydney UAV Engineering | Project Director of University of Sydney Design Build Fly

For the past three years, I have been deeply involved with the University of Sydney Design Build Fly (USYD DBF), a student team dedicated to designing, manufacturing, and testing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Now, my time at USYD DBF has concluded as I wrap up my tenure as the Project Director of the 2023-24 season, as well as the Co-President of its parent society, Sydney UAV Engineering.   At the start of the season, Joshua and I set ambitious goals to grow and establish this young team. I am proud to share that under our leadership, we achieved significant milestones: - Broke into the Top 10 of the AIAA Design Build Fly Competition for the first time in Australian History, placing 10th out of 107 global teams - Maintained our streak as the 1st placed team in the Asia-Pacific and Australia - Rapid-prototyped a record three aircraft within 7 months - Created a thorough induction and training program for recruits, coupled with a mock DBF Competition - Cemented our brand image and reputation through professional and community events, marketing, merchandise, and videography content - Doubled number of sponsors - Created a comprehensive HR system with documentation and conflict-resolution strategies   These achievements result from the dedication of over 60 individuals in the Engineering and Operations teams, who represent the brightest future of engineering and their respective fields. I am deeply thankful to my Co-President, Joshua Kallarackel, for being a pillar throughout this journey, whose larger-than-life visions gave us direction as a society. Jacob James and Hugh Dillon, who led the Design and Manufacturing departments respectively, inspired us all with their extensive technical knowledge that was rivalled only by their commitment. With Joshua and Jessica Song leading the society for the incoming season, I have full faith that SUAVE will continue to thrive and reach new heights.   This experience has undoubtedly been the highlight of my university career, enriching me as an engineer, a leader, a team member, and a human being. I am proud of my contributions that have helped pave the way for the team over the years, from kickstarting our manufacturing journey and leading the team’s first-ever aircraft build, to directing the group effort to produce our best-performing technical report to date. More importantly, I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of a team of like-minded and driven individuals with a love for aviation.   As I take the skills and experiences I’ve gained into the next chapter of my career, I look forward to new challenges with great excitement. All the best, SUAVE and USYD DBF!
