As we enter the second half of 2024, we are reflecting on two great industry recognitions we received earlier this year: we were named to the CB Insights "AI 100" list of the top 100 private AI companies, alongside OpenAI and Databricks and others, and we were selected as honorees in Fast Company's World Changing Ideas 2024 list, where our world changing idea was described as "using AI to design batteries." Interest in AI is heating up across the board, especially in hardware and the physical sciences. We are proud of our team's pioneering work in the space! Huge congratulations to our Cofounder and Chief Scientist Prof. Venkat Viswanathan for receiving the prestigious 2024 Energy Lectureship Award for Energy Storage!
We are very proud to share the following news from one of our portfolio companies! Dr. Venkat Viswanathan, Co-Founder & Chief Scientist of Aionics, Inc., has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Energy Lectureship Award for Energy Storage by ACS Energy Letters. Dr. Viswanathan is an Associate Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he leads a pioneering interdisciplinary group working on technologies that can accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation and aviation. His contributions to the field have been recognized through numerous awards, including MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Award, the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in Chemistry, and the National Science Foundation CAREER award. As Chief Scientist at Aionics, Dr. Viswanathan champions the deployment of machine learning-based approaches to industrial R&D. He believes that the Aionics commitment to high-quality science and innovative data and modeling tools positions the company to make a significant impact in the field of clean energy. Please join us in congratulating Venkat on this recognition and in celebrating his ongoing contributions to advancing energy storage technologies. If you were in Times Square this past week, you may have seen our mission on display to the world, in partnership with our friends at Brex: that generative AI can do way more than just build cool chatbots -- it can actually help us save the planet. We're referring, of course, to all the ways in which gen AI can accelerate science. In our case, gen AI accelerates the process of designing and commercializing new materials for clean energy. For more on our efforts using generative AI to accelerate electrolyte design, check out this article on TechCrunch: https://lnkd.in/exnb7Nj8

Our team is back from a fantastic week in Dallas at the ARPA-E Innovation Summit! We enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting lots of new ones. It's exhilarating to see all the momentum building behind climate technology -- not to mention lots of private and public investment. See you in Washington, DC next year!

The Technology Showcase is OPEN at the ARPA-E Summit and we are excited share all about what we’re building at the intersection of AI, materials science, and energy. We’re also unveiling our virtual reality-based battery design game - strap in and see if you can beat our experts! Stop by booth 342 and say hi!

The future of battery science is virtual -- are you ready? We are excited to unveil our virtual reality-based battery lab at the ARPA-E Innovation Summit next week in Dallas! This year, Aionics teamed up with NX Design Inc to create an immersive battery design test lab for the Meta Oculus Quest 3. Although this is just a game for now, it reflects our focus at Aionics, Inc. to accelerate R&D in energy materials by making it increasingly virtual with closed-loop AI and simulation capabilities. We envision a future where millions of candidate battery designs are "tested" computationally before the best candidates are ever made and tested in the lab. Be sure to stop by Booth 342 of the technology showcase or at the Climate Tech Cocktails event at the Meow Wolf to give it a shot! Aionics' pioneering work in using AI to design batteries is officially a world-changing idea! We are excited to share that Aionics has been selected as an honoree in Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards. This year’s World Changing Ideas Awards showcase 50 winners, 127 finalists, and 172 honorable mentions—with health, education, energy, and AI among the most popular categories. Aionics was selected in the "Small And Mighty: Fewer than 50 Employees" category. “There are two parallel revolutions happening right now,” said Chief Executive Officer Dr. Austin Sendek. “One is the exponential trend in high-performance computing power and efficiency; the other is the exponential trend in AI model performance. At Aionics, we combine these by first using high-performance computing resources to simulate quantum-level phenomena in battery materials, and then using those insights to train AI models to search through the entire corpus of known and hypothetical materials to find the proverbial needle in the haystack. With new advancements in generative AI including large language models, this process only becomes faster, easier, and more accurate.” Read more at our website here: https://lnkd.in/girXNy5u.
