Part 4 in our series on real-life harms of AI during the spookiest month of the year 👻 An alarming shift towards a surveillance state... but with children. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is exploring new ways to use facial recognition technology (FRT) to track migrant children as they age. In the words of John Boyd (assistant director to the OBIM, whose role is to research future biometric identity services for the government), they seek to identify "down to the infant." This is a worrying infringement on the privacy and consent of minors and marks a watershed expansion in the use of FRT, which has traditionally not been applied to children. A Pew Research Center survey shows many K-12 teachers are uncertain about using AI in education—35% aren't sure of its impact, while only 6% see more good than harm.
