With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Paul Bello, former Managing Partner of AKF. Paul joined AKF as one of the firm’s first employees in 1989 as a young, talented, up-and-coming engineer. At the time, AKF was a start-up MEP/FP firm with one office in New York City and a handful of employees. Paul’s business aptitude and technical skills saw him quickly promoted to Partner and later Managing Partner in 1997. He would continue in that role for the next 20 years. Under his leadership, the firm grew to over 400 employees throughout the East Coast, Midwest, and Mexico and added multiple integrated services under the AKF umbrella. Paul was a transformational leader who guided the firm and our clients through our successes as well as in difficult times – from 9/11 to the 2008 financial crisis and Superstorm Sandy. His focus on the members created a sense of unity and belonging along the way, and he inspired us to be our best. We are grateful to Paul for his vision, commitment, and determination. He will be greatly missed. Paul’s obituary: https://lnkd.in/eQZjmpXM Q&A with Paul upon his January 2023 retirement: https://lnkd.in/gsB5-t5W

Through a commitment to optimizing spaces, AKF’s MEP/FP Engineering and Integrated Services power human potential.
About us
In 1989, AKF was founded in response to clients’ needs for a mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection firm that provided engineering leadership, better communication, and direct access to the best talent to solve the challenges they faced. We created a firm with a flat organizational structure that eliminated bureaucracy and needless hierarchy, allowing clients to directly connect to the team with the best solutions to complex engineering challenges. Our obsessive drive to be responsive to the needs of our clients led us to add a suite of services. By bringing our integrated field, design, and technical services together under a single point of contact, we further eliminated project friction and provided leadership from conceptual design through ongoing facility operations. Whether in workplace, higher education, hospitality, or healthcare, AKF’s clients rely on our depth of knowledge to drive solutions that meet the needs of today with the inspiration for tomorrow’s built environment. AKF participates in CANstruction, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's Cycle for Survival, the American Heart Association's Wall Street Run and Heart Walk, and the Special Olympics Minnesota's Polar Plunge. Within our communities, we volunteer with the ACE Mentor Program, partner with the Salvadori Center, and collaborate with YouthBuild Boston to provide pro-bono engineering services while mentoring local students on engineering principles. On May 1, 2024, AKF joined WSP, one of the world’s leading professional services firms. The uniting of our firms provides expanded opportunities for our people and our clients to access WSP’s global network of expertise across every facet of the built environment while maintaining the focus on entrepreneurship and innovation that is central to who we are at AKF. Together, we will continue our shared commitment to cutting-edge engineering, decarbonization, and client satisfaction.

AKF was proud to be involved in this history-making building - the tallest residential building in Minnesota and the tallest building built in Minnesota in the past 30 years! With the project also came very specific challenges related to properly pressurizing a 550-ft tall building against Stack Effect in Minneapolis’s extremely cold weather. Whole building pressurization isn’t often examined from both design and operations perspectives; the project team was able to successfully leverage AKF's commissioning and design expertise to address this issue. #Minnesota #StackEffect #MEPdesign #Commissioning
Building: Eleven on the River Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota 🇺🇸 Completed: 2022 Height: 550 ft (170m) Floors: 42 Apartments: 120 units Architect: Robert A. M. Stern Architects Eleven on the River is a 550 ft (170m) tall skyscraper in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, located at 1111 W River Pkwy. Completed in 2022, Eleven has 42 floors and 120 units. It is the 7th-tallest building in Minneapolis, and the tallest residential building in Minnesota. The art deco tower was designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects. Construction on the tower began in October 2019 and was completed in 2022. Minneapolis based Ryan Companies US, Inc. served as the general contractor for the project. The building draws on early 20th-century Art Deco aesthetics. Its clean lines, geometric forms, and balanced proportions evoke both timeless elegance and forward-thinking innovation. From an engineering perspective, the project leveraged advanced structural solutions to achieve both robustness and flexibility. Meyer Borgman Johnson’s structural framework, coupled with the innovative use of precast concrete panels produced by Gage Brothers and installed by Amerect Inc., not only streamlined construction but also delivered a distinctive sandblasted finish reminiscent of historic craftsmanship.
