Helping transplant centers save lives through paired kidney donation. Living Kidney Donation | Technology | Innovation

About us

In 2006, together with a dedicated group passionate about paired donation, Dr. Michael A. Rees founded the Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation (APKD). We provide transplant center personnel with the education necessary to use our Nobel prize-winning algorithm, developed by Alvin Roth PhD, to match one incompatible pair with another, getting pairs matched faster, with better results. Our concierge-level support, combined with our no-penalty, lower-cost approach, allows transplant coordinators more time to do what matters most to them: support families and patients. Additionally, the APKD offers transplant center partners the most comprehensive donor support program in the nation. In addition to covering transplant-related expenses, the APKD also offers comprehensive insurance for all living donors against any complications related to their nephrectomy…and more. Through generosity, innovation and technology, the APKD has helped change the way the world looks at living kidney donation, but our work is not done.

An extraordinary encounter unfolded during an Uber ride in New Jersey between driver Tim Letts, 33, and passenger William Sumiel Jr., 73. Sumiel, who was undergoing dialysis and in need of a kidney transplant, shared his health struggles with Letts. Moved by Sumiel’s story, Letts, a U.S. Army veteran, felt inspired to help by offering to donate one of his kidneys. This was in October 2021. After tests confirmed that they were a match, Letts followed through on his commitment, and the successful transplant surgery took place in 2022. This remarkable act of kindness highlights the unexpected connections and profound impacts that can arise from simple human interactions. It is human service and heroism combined. 🥺 God made that connection. The amazing part of this is that both men who are from different generations and stock are the same matches for a kidney. Look at God! It really is not about black or white most times. Same with blood donation 🩸 it's about humanity, your DNA. We are put on this earth to love and #Love is an action word ❤️ #TATHOTS Credit: @millionairessteps

  • Motivated by the need to make a difference and a desire to be a blessing to someone in need, Clay Hopkins describes donating his kidney to a stranger on May 17, 2024 as a “privilege.” With the support of his wife and family, he worked to become healthy enough to donate. “I began walking and eating a better diet. To that end, I was able to lose over 20 pounds and get myself in the best shape I have been in a long time,” says Clay. He has some advice for anyone considering donating a kidney: Go through the testing process. Do what you have to do to get yourself physically and mentally prepared. Make sure you are ready for a marathon. Make sure you have a STRONG support system. You will have to depend on them for a time and you want to make sure they are ready and able to support you. If everything checks out and a good recipient is identified, it is worth the pain and sacrifice to help someone live a more complete life. Clay Hopkins, MBA @DukeUniversityHospital

  • While our primary focus is working with clinics to help them use our program, we are patient-focused and want to support patients and donors. Our Donor Protection Program is part of that. When someone is matched with a recipient through the APKD program, we cover the cost of any transplant-related expenses for living donors. This includes lost wages and travel-related expenses like food, lodging and fuel. In September 2020, Julie donated her kidney to a perfect stranger in New Orleans. Julie gave this beautiful gift as an altruistic donor. Our Donor Protection Program covered Julie's wages while she was out for surgery and recovery. 💙💚 #KidneyDonation #LivingDonation #KidneyDisease #SavingLives

  • STORY OF HOPE: Johnny Cashmore struggled with Type 1 Diabetes for most of his life. A few years ago, he learned he would need a kidney transplant and was placed on dialysis. His wife, Jessica, wanted to give him a kidney, but she was not a match. Fortunately for Johnny and Jessica, APKD's kidney matching software found a match for him and a recipient compatible with Jessica's kidney. Her kidney went to a recipient at Ochsner Health in Louisiana, and helped create a living donor chain that went on to help save several more lives!
