Chatting about alternatives to academia! Join us #AltAc. From: Ashley Ruba, Adam Ostrowski, Nicole Betz, Kyle Ireton

About us

We are a group of former and current academics, motivated to connect and encourage others toward alternative careers! We have adopted the unifying term "AltAc" to describe the diversity of options which await academics who explore past the frontier of familiarity. Our goal is to increase familiarity with alternative careers and to build community around these interests, and in doing so provide guidance and reduce fear or discomfort about navigating the transition process. We maintain a vibrant, diverse, and friendly community on Twitter primarily, but which is branching out to additional media platforms as the intense interest and engagement of our audience continues to grow. We host a new podcast series focused on the idea of "chats" about AltAc themes, in partnership with our esteemed colleague Akhila Jayaram. If you ever have questions, ideas, or simply want to talk, please reach out to us here or elsewhere. We are cofounded by 4 team members: Ashely Ruba, Adam Ostrowski, Nicole Betz, and Kyle Ireton.

Imposter Syndrome. Two words that seem to pop up a lot in our careers. A recent study found that 62% of UK adults experience imposter syndrome at work, where individuals feel inadequate and doubt their accomplishments. Here are 3 effective remedies: 1️⃣ Document your strengths: Keep a list of your achievements and unique qualifications to maintain a positive perspective. Maybe you got a personal best or exceeded a weekly target - celebrate the wins even if they are small! 2️⃣ Reality Check: Recognise negative thoughts as just thoughts, not facts. Counter your self-doubt with affirmations of your skills and experience and trust yourself to come good. 3️⃣ Build Support: Lead on your relationships with colleagues for reassurance and seek feedback regularly from managers to combat isolation and self-doubt. 'Stop Start Continue' feedback forms are a good way of doing this. Remember, you're capable of overcoming imposter syndrome and succeeding in your career so keep pushing forward.

Have you gone into work this Monday morning and decided enough is enough and decided to quit? Quitting properly means putting it in writing. Here are 3 tips to getting this resignation letter right: 1️⃣ Keep it professional – While you may have a friendly rapport with your manager, remember that a resignation should be handled appropriately. Do this by addressing your manager formally. 2️⃣ Make it concise and to the point – Lengthy explanations are unnecessary; if you have concerns or things that need sorting out, address them professionally in a private conversation with your manager. 3️⃣ Customise it to your contract – Demonstrating consideration for the terms of your notice period outlined in your contract reflects a thoughtful decision-making process and prevents any unexpected issues. Good luck in handing that notice in!

A lot of resumes I see are full of "fluff". Here's some easy wins to instantly improve your resume. ❌Things to avoid putting on your resume❌ - Team player - Highly organized - Great communication skills - Performs well under pressure - Photo of yourself (No need for this in North America - plus your LinkedIn profile would have this) The list goes on.....these are statements that don't tell recruiters or managers anything about your accomplishments. For hiring teams, these things are table stakes. 💡Things to focus on instead💡 - Numbers/stats validating your experience and contribution - How something you did improved efficiency in your teams day to day work - Small 1-2 sentence description of what your current/past employer does/did (under your title and dates of employment) - Link to your LinkedIn profile #resumewriting #resumetips

How PhDs get their resume to the top of the pile ❓ 1. DON'T use overly academic terminology. DO use industry-relevant terminology. 2. DON'T just describe what you've done. DO focus on the impact of your contributions. 3. DON'T use overly creative, graphical formats (unless applying for creative roles). DO use a legible, standard layout; We're working on a solution to help PhDs navigate the transition. Get a Job in Biotech | 1:1 Coaching. Courses. Community.

After 7 years in academia, I had lost my sense of purpose and confidence 💸My first postdoc ran out of funding and I was laid off. 👎My second postdoc was back to back proposal rejections. The message was not "your science isn't good enough". The message was "your pedigree isn't good enough". There was no path for me to become faculty. The die had been cast. 🎲 ---------- I had become a scientist because 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. 🙌 I wanted to treat & cure diseases. I wanted to help others. But the elitist academic system did not value that. 🤦♂️ They did not value me, either. I could feel my vision of advancing medicine was dying. I needed to find a way out. ---------- 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The problem was, I didn't know a single person who had gone this route. All of my training and network was in academia. Fortunately, I was introduced to a friend of a friend who steered me away from bad advice and taught me enough to met my foot in the door. Several months and over 100 applications later, I was given a life line. I got an offer at a great company. And I took it. ---------- I transplanted my entire family 1800 miles, sold our house, and moved to a city I'd never visited to accept my first job in industry. We did all of that in only 3 weeks. Was it stressful? Very. But that bold move was the beginning of a new life for me and my family. That move enabled me to pursue what I had always wanted. 𝗜𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆, 𝗜 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. ---------- This is not just my story. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗣𝗵𝗗𝘀, 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀. If you feel rejected, forgotten, ignored... Like your dreams are dead in the water... Do not give up yet. There is an entire world out there that values you 🌍 ---------- There are resources here on LinkedIn to help you. But the first step is to ask for help 🙋♂️🙋♀️ Find a better path. Choose to be valued. ---------- If you are ready to find that better path, join me and the hundreds of Life Science PhDs breaking into biotech at Trulitica.
