About us
American Geotechnical & Environmental Services (A.G.E.S.), Inc. is a qualified Small Business and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) specialized in providing geotechnical design services. The company headquarters are located in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania with branch offices in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania and McLean, Virginia. A.G.E.S., Inc. has grown to be one of the largest specialty geotechnical consultants in northeastern United States with a strong focus on providing geotechnical engineering services on public infrastructure projects. The majority of our geotechnical investigations and reports have been completed in accordance with DOT design manuals and we are familiar with FHWA and AASHTO design requirements. We have provided geotechnical design services for over $11 billion of construction, with over 250 multi-lane miles of interstate and highways and more than 2,500 bridges ranging from new multi-span dual structures to the rehabilitation of single-span bridges. Our projects have been performed in extremely varied geology resulting in a wide variety of geotechnical hazards, including deep and shallow mining, industrial / contaminated sites, thick glacial soils, steeply dipping bedrock, indurated clays with low shear strength, active solutioning, poorly defined rock / saprolite, acid rock drainage, and coastal plains deposits. We have a strong understanding for project schedule and cost, with innovative solutions for minimizing construction cost and time. The company employs a staff capable of efficient design and large workload, and provides effective recommendations for subsurface investigations that maximize cost savings and reduce uncertainty and risk. We understand the importance of communicating geotechnical concerns to the entire project team in order to allow for proper use in overall design, and pride ourselves in our ability to address complex geotechnical issues while working with both owners and specialty geotechnical contractors

Two weeks ago, Ryan M Miller, P.E. and Siavash Vahidi, Ph.D., P.E. of American Geotechnical & Environmental Services, Inc. attended a Hard Hat Tour with WTS Philadelphia of the Interstate 95 Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) project. A.G.E.S., Inc. provided geotechnical design services as a subconsultant to Pennoni on this $330 Million project, which is to be constructed by Buckley & Company, Inc. Buckley is actively constructing various elements of the project, including the support area for the future park site and the bridge structure over Interstate 95. Based on the subsurface materials, deep foundations are being utilized for the foundations, and lightweight materials were proposed in the area of the grade increase for the park site to reduce the settlement of the underlying soils. We are looking forward to seeing the advancement of this project as it develops.

Last month, Mark Styler, PhD, PE of American Geotechnical & Environmental Services, Inc., traveled to Harrisburg to attend the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) Infrastructure Conference. The event was an opportunity to meet with industry partners and hear from key government officials on important topics. The program included interesting discussions on digital project delivery and workforce development. Among others, leaders from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources were present to provide agency updates.

American Geotechnical & Environmental Services, Inc. (AGES) performed geotechnical final design as a subconsultant to Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) and Shirley Contracting Company, LLC (SCC) on the Northstar Boulevard (Route 50 to Evergreen Mills Road) design-build project for Loudoun County Department of Transportation & Capital Infrastructure (Loudoun County Government). SCC is constructing the 1.6-mile new roadway project, which includes improvements and connections to adjacent roads, new shared-use paths on both sides of the roadway, and a new bridge over the North Fork of Broad Run. The NOVA office of AGES has been providing consultation and on-site support during the construction of the spread footing and drilled shaft foundations for the bridge, earthwork and subgrade preparation for the roadway and shared use path, and other geotechnical elements of the project. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2025 and is the final section which will provide an important connection between Route 50 and Route 7 in Loudoun County. (Photo Credit: SCC)

Before last weekend’s Backyard Brawl between the University of Pittsburgh Panthers and West Virginia University Mountaineers football teams, American Geotechnical & Environmental Services, Inc. teamed up with Langan Engineering & Environmental Services in a “Geotechnical Contractors versus Geotechnical Engineers” food drive to support the Greater Washington County Food Bank and the Food Helpers of Washington County. The contractor team included Nicholson Construction and MENARD USA. The competition concluded with a picnic to celebrate this great cause and share some laughs with our industry friends. Together, the group collected nearly ONE TON of food for donation, with the Contractors handily defeating the Engineers, and we are looking forward to the competition next year! Thank you to Katie Brust, Taylor DaCanal, Shirley Tang, and Lauren Dziagwa for organizing our efforts at AGES.

American Geotechnical & Environmental Services, Inc. performed geotechnical design as a subconsultant to CDR Maguire (CDR Companies) on the Interstate 84 Section 282 project for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), which includes various foundation types to support the new bridges. Solveig Sahlin, P.E. and Siavash Vahidi, Ph.D., P.E. in our King of Prussia office have been providing consultation and on-site support for CDR and PennDOT during construction of the micropile, drilled shaft, and driven pile foundations. The overall project is scheduled to be completed in 2026 and will replace the dual mainline bridge carrying Interstate 84 over Roaring Brook and the active Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad and construct a new right exit to State Route 435 with a flyover structure.
