Research from Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute’s at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago strongly suggests that Kawasaki disease is caused by a single respiratory virus that is yet to be identified. Findings contradict the theory that many different pathogens or toxins could cause this disease that can lead to serious cardiac complications in young children. “The cause of Kawasaki disease has been a mystery for over 50 years,” said Anne Rowley, MD, pediatric infectious diseases expert and scientist at Manne Research Institute at Lurie Children’s, who is the lead author on the study published in Laboratory Investigation. “Our compelling data are a huge step forward and provide a clear direction for the field to identify and sequence the virus that causes Kawasaki disease in susceptible children. This will be critical to advancing the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Kawasaki disease.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gHGduauc. #kawasakidisease #infectiousdiseases #research

When Caitlyn and Shawn went for what they expected to be a routine ultrasound, they had they had no idea it would lead them to Lurie Children’s and into fetal surgery all in the same day. An ultrasound technician at a hospital in Chicago detected a fetal abnormality and helped the couple get a same day appointment at The Chicago Institute for Fetal Health, one of a handful of comprehensive fetal centers in the country where they could get the specialized care they needed. After a specialized Ultrasound at the CIFH, Caitlyn was diagnosed with Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). The CIFH team explained that one fetus was receiving more of the blood flow from the placenta than the other, causing the fetuses to grow and develop differently, which could lead to severe issues for both twins. The couple was shocked and worried but felt comforted by the specialists at CIFH who answered their questions and prepared them for the road ahead. To give the twins the best chance at survival, they made a quick decision to undergo surgery. Caitlyn underwent a minimally invasive laser procedure, in which she was awake, to treat the affected blood vessels in the placenta, and help each fetus get a more equal blood flow. The surgery was successful, and Shawn and Caitlyn waited out the rest of their pregnancy at home while seeing specialists for weekly ultrasounds. Charlotte and Emerson were born into the world healthy and with only a one-pound difference in their weight. Shawn and Caitlyn took them home after only a few nights. Today the twins are eight months old and are already showing their unique personalities. Their parents are so grateful for the care they received at Lurie Children’s and the future they can look forward to for their family. The Chicago Institute for Fetal Health is one of a handful of comprehensive fetal centers in the country.
