The collaborative model of the Annenberg Wildlife Crossing has inspired a new effort to build passages for animals across the state: California Wildlife Reconnected. This initiative will work with state agencies and nonprofits to leverage public and private resources with the goal of developing and swiftly implementing a plan for California wildlife connectivity. #CaliforniaWildlife #PublicPrivatePartnership #Conservation #Wildlife #LosAngeles #Biodiversity #P22 #LATimes

About us
The Annenberg Foundation is a private family foundation that provides funding and support to nonprofit organizations in the United States and globally. Since 1989, it has generously funded programs in education and youth development; arts, culture and humanities; civic and community life; health and human services; and animal services and the environment. In addition, the Foundation and its Board of Directors are directly involved in the community with several projects that expand and complement its grant support to nonprofits. Among them are innovative nonprofit capacity building initiatives, the Annenberg Space for Photography, Explore, and the Metabolic Studio. The Annenberg Foundation exists to advance the public well-being through improved communication. As the principal means of achieving this goal, the Foundation encourages the development of more effective ways to share ideas and knowledge.

Exciting updates as we complete the first month of our #ResponsibleAI journey! See the recap from our Executive Director Cinny Kennard, and don't forget to sign up for the AI Peer Exchange on August 29 if you're a current Technology Association of Grantmakers member: https://lnkd.in/gV9E49fk. #ResponsibleAI #Annenberg #PhilanthropyForward
While #philanthropy sometimes has limitless resources to experiment with #AI (or to avoid on philosophical grounds), it's nonprofits who have a real need to adopt emerging tech. Program officer Nicole Smith from the Annenberg Foundation recently shared the results of a grantee survey regarding AI perceptions and practices. Today, I want to go deeper and explore some important differences between grantmakers and grantees when it comes to #AI. We asked the same questions of foundation staff AND our grantees in a recent survey exploring AI adoption and aspiration. Here’s what the findings indicate: 🔹 A higher percentage of grantees rate their understanding of AI as very low or low compared to foundation staff. 🔹 As expected (based on studies like this https://lnkd.in/gfZ6PX6M), nearly 30% of grantees are using AI for fundraising-related activities. 🔹 Grantees have a higher interest in automating simple repetitive tasks as well as in organizing and interpreting information. 🔹 Grantees have a higher interest in using AI for predicting outcomes and patterns compared to foundation staff. According to the Annenberg Foundation's LA-focused survey responses, grantees appear to have a broader and more immediate need for AI integration into their daily operations, particularly in fundraising and information processing, whereas foundation staff demonstrate a more cautious approach to AI adoption. If you’ve taken a similar approach, what are you hearing from your grantees and nonprofit partners? How are you wrestling with the needs of nonprofits and your internal bias/perceptions regarding emerging technology? ➡️ JOIN US on 8/29 to learn more about how #philanthropy is grappling with AI in this member exchange event featuring Tech & Ops leaders from Annenberg Foundation, Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Archive Center, and Kalamazoo Community Foundation. RSVP at https://lnkd.in/gjZG96j9. The Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, which broke ground on Earth Day in 2022, has proven the transformative power of public-private partnerships in bringing connectivity infrastructure projects to fruition. The California Wildlife Reconnected partnership seeks to scale this successful collaborative model to build more wildlife crossings and improve wildlife movement across the state. #CaliforniaWidlife #Reconnected #WildlifeCrossings #Wildlife #California #Ecosystems #Biodiversity

“The most recent applicant pool for Fast Forward’s Startup Accelerator, a three-month program for early-stage nonprofit startups, saw a 600 percent increase in AI-powered nonprofit applicants compared to the year prior.” – Stanford Social Innovation Review #AIinPhilanthropy #PhilanthropyTech #ResponsibleAI #Annenberg #Philanthropy #PhilanthropyForward
When it comes to emerging technology like #AI, we've shared some of what Annenberg Foundation is trying out, but what about grantees? In a recent study by Project Evident and Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), 77% of nonprofits believe their organizations would benefit from MORE AI (source: https://lnkd.in/gGqKwCRv). More recently in this SSIR article, Fast Forward shared that they’re seeing a dramatic uptick in nonprofits leveraging (or seeking to leverage) AI. “The most recent applicant pool for Fast Forward’s Startup Accelerator, a three-month program for early-stage nonprofit startups, saw a 600 percent increase in AI-powered nonprofit applicants compared to the year prior.” #AIinPhilanthropy #PhilanthropyTech #ResponsibleAI #Annenberg #Philanthropy #PhilanthropyForward Chantal Forster Cinny Kennard Nicole Smith

An exciting update on the launch of our AI Governance Committee, aiming to ensure a holistic approach to responsible data and AI usage within the foundation! #AIinPhilanthropy #PhilanthropyTech #ResponsibleAI #Annenberg #Philanthropy #PhilanthropyForward
Continuing to share @AnnenbergFoundation’s AI journey … After a listening tour, we are now focused on the core underpinning of the work: Governance. Last week, we launched our AI Governance Committee. Composed of reps from all departments, we hope to ensure a holistic approach to responsible data and AI usage within the foundation. Our first order of business is to review, adopt, and oversee the creation of a Data Usage Policy, staying mindful that our data practices (including AI) should align with our mission and values – and ensure the highest degree of privacy and security. Internal pilots using AI will also be brought to this committee for review. But what about our external AI initiatives? Concurrent with our internal work, we’ve begun a listening series with our nonprofit partners to explore their current state and aspirations related to AI. We look forward to sharing what we discover. Have you adopted an AI Policy at your organization? I’d love to hear about your approach so we can learn together. #AIinPhilanthropy #PhilanthropyTech #ResponsibleAI #Annenberg #Philanthropy #PhilanthropyForward Cinny Kennard Chantal Forster Nicole Smith

A critical question: "How should values drive your AI Policy?" Explore our approach of gathering input while grounding ourselves in the principles of #ResponsibleAI. #AIinPhilanthropy #PhilanthropyTech #Philanthropy #PhilanthropyForward
How should values drive your AI Policy in #philanthropy? Before we walk too far down the road of policy development and #AI adoption at the Annenberg Foundation, we paused to ground ourselves in the principles of responsible AI. We wanted to ensure that all voices were working together and included in translating these principles across the foundation. To gather input, we invited all staff to participate in an online brainstorming activity we conducted with our AI Strategy Resident, Chantal Forster. If you'd like to try something similar, here was our approach: ◼️ Created a Mural brainstorming board (https://mural.co/) ◼️ Seeded the board with widely accepted AI principles such as those by NIST (https://lnkd.in/gvDdW-Bf) ◼️ Held a 20 minute “pop-up breakfast” to build out the board together with staff, translating AI principles to align with our values ◼️ Recorded the exercise via Zoom to create the video you see here ◼️ For anyone who missed the activity, we sent a participation link afterwards to capture additional thoughts All voices matter as we navigate the responsible use of AI internally as well as externally with our nonprofit partners. The perspectives shared in this exercise will directly inform the Data Use Policy we aim to adopt later this month. #AIinPhilanthropy #PhilanthropyTech #ResponsibleAI #Annenberg #Philanthropy #PhilanthropyForward
