“We know that AI is putting out incredibly biased content… Humans come in with biases and preconceived notions about students in their classroom. AI is just another place in which unfairness is being laid upon students of color.”

The most common type of child maltreatment is neglect — when a child’s basic needs are not met, such as food, housing and education. While neglect is often tied to the effects of poverty, it is important to recognize that poverty alone does not equal neglect. Learn more about child maltreatment:

Did you know that the Annie E. Casey Foundation is contributing to the global movement towards greener cities? How? Through our Alvéole bee program we host a bee hive on top of our building in downtown Baltimore. Our queen is named Annie Bee! 😁 Our staff can visit the hive at our building, participate in educational workshops to learn about nature hands-on, and follow our bees digitally at https://lnkd.in/eG9Enwgj. In July, our beekeeper harvested 160 pounds of honey from the hive! It has been a very productive season.

When Generation Work kicked off in 2016, we wanted to understand how to partner with employers and workforce practitioners to build meaningful career pathways for young adults in local job markets across the country. It's exciting to see how this work continues to progress and how much we've learned over the years, especially related to leaning into young people's strengths in the workplace. A new set of case studies from Child Trends covers examples of positive youth development practices being integrated into workplaces throughout the Generation Work network. Lots of practical recommendations for employers and workforce practitioners! Read more here 👇

Using data to refine and expand programming is essential for nonprofits, but it can be challenging for organizations with limited resources. Over seven years, we invested in the Building Evidence to Advance Equity initiative, helping nonprofits use data to better serve youth and families of color.

Child welfare agencies are increasingly placing children with relatives when courts decide they need to be removed from their homes, recognizing that family provides the stability and support children need to thrive. In this video, Senior Policy Associate Todd Lloyd gives an overview of Casey’s Family Ties series, which details state-level policies related to kinship care in nearly every state. Last week, we welcomed members of the Atlanta Fatherhood Community Initiative to our Foundation staff meeting to discuss their efforts to strengthen families by helping fathers in Atlanta. They empower fathers to build community, develop parenting skills and enhance communication with their teens. Thank you to Lawrence Wilbon, Michelle Lockhart, Melissa Carter and Dr. Latrice Rollins for sharing their insights with our team. Learn more about this initiative: https://lnkd.in/gqvXZWXW

Preschoolers who spend more than 75 minutes a day on tablets are more likely to have increased outbursts of anger and frustration. This can create a "vicious cycle" where tablet use delays children’s ability to manage their emotions, leading them to rely on more screen time to soothe themselves when upset.

“Arresting people for unmet needs is simply not humane or sustainable.” – Denise White, deputy director of Policing Alternatives and Diversion (PAD) Initiative Since 2017, PAD has connected Atlanta residents with community-based resources and helped them avoid arrests or jail time. People who are struggling with poor mental health, substance use or other challenges are directed to community services that can help, instead of jail.
