🌍🐟 Happy #WorldAnimalDay! At Aquatic Life Institute, we’re dedicated to reducing the suffering of the trillions of aquatic animals caught and farmed each year for human consumption. Through partnerships across the global #seafood supply chain, we’re pushing for higher welfare standards in #aquaculture and #capturefisheries. From advocating for stricter welfare measures in legislation and seafood certification schemes, to transforming corporate policies, we’re striving for a world where all aquatic animals are treated with respect. Join us in spreading awareness and advocating for compassionate practices in the global seafood industry. 💙 #AnimalWelfare #AquaticAnimals #WorldAnimalDay2024

Head of Global Policy at Aquatic Life Institute, Giulia Malerbi, recently joined the How I Learned to Love Shrimp podcast to discuss the efforts being made to stop commercial #octopusfarming before it starts. With a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach, Giulia highlighted the urgent need for a global ban on this harmful practice. Octopuses are particularly ill-suited for captive environments, raising serious welfare concerns. She also emphasized the broader implications of octopus farming, including the environmental and public health threats. The global campaign to #BanOctopusFarming is already seeing major victories, particularly in the U.S., with Washington State and California implementing the first bans. Check out Giulia's podcast! 🐙 https://lnkd.in/g8GaykHR

It's time for equitable change. The just food transition must hold corporations accountable and shift power to communities, cooperatives, small producers, smallholder farmers and micro, small and medium enterprises. It should involve and empower industry workers, women, youth, farmers, fishers, indigenous communities, and marginalised groups through the adoption of agroecokogy, high welfare standards and land rights recognition. And it must prioritise equity, food sovereignty, and climate justice, whilst addressing intersecting forms of discrimination. How? The #JustTransition White Paper makes the case for a just transition by detailing the impact on seven key areas. The document has been through extensive consultation amongst impacted groups. Over 120 individuals representing 72 organisations from 35 countries provided feedback. California has just become the second state to ban #octopusfarming in the U.S. The law also prohibits the sales of commercially farmed octopus products across the state. This is a major victory in the global #animalwelfare movement. A huge thank you to Governor Gavin Newsom for signing this important bill into law. https://lnkd.in/eG9hipYg

🌟California has just become the second state to prohibit #octopusfarming, marking a monumental step forward in the global effort to end this practice. The passage of Bill AB 3162, the California Oppose Cruelty to Octopuses (OCTO) Act, not only bans octopus farming but also prohibits the sale of commercially farmed #octopus within the state. 🐙 Aquatic Life Institute is proud to have played a significant role in this victory, providing in-person testimony in support of the bill alongside Animal Rights Initiative, and sustaining ongoing advocacy efforts to ensure its successful passage. We extend our heartfelt thanks to co-sponsors, Animal Legal Defense Fund and Social Compassion in Legislation, for their unwavering advocacy in making this milestone possible. Earlier this year, in March, Governor Jay Inslee signed HB 1153 into law, making Washington the first state to ban octopus farming. With California now following suit, we are pushing for more state-wide bans while also advocating strongly for the federal bill introduced in July by U.S. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Lisa Murkowski. Octopus farming poses serious risks to public health, the environment, and #animal welfare. These intelligent, solitary creatures are particularly ill-suited to captivity due to their carnivorous diets, complex behaviors, and delicate physiology. It is crucial that we continue to work towards protecting these incredible animals. 🐙💙

🐟 Did you know that fish are capable of feeling pain, making decisions, and forming complex social relationships? They are sentient beings who deserve our respect and protection. #FishAmnestyDay also serves as a reminder of the critical role that fish play in maintaining a healthy planet, and why the global seafood industry must prioritize their welfare. Improving #animalwelfare in the industrial #fishing and #aquaculture industries is not only crucial for ethical reasons, but also for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including responsible consumption, climate action, life below water, and others. Aquatic Life Institute is working across the global #seafood supply chain to implement high welfare standards for fish and other aquatic animals—from production all the way through to consumption. 🌍🔗Learn more about our work at ali.fish

The US is currently leading the way when it comes to opposing #OctopusFarming. The world’s first legislative ban on octopus farming was enacted in Washington State in March this year and a bill was introduced in July aiming to ban commercial octopus farming and the imports of commercially farmed octopus across the entire country. Our member organisation Aquatic Life Institute has been at the forefront of this exciting momentum. We asked Livia Schonenberg to catch us up to speed. Octopuses belong to the wild. Factory farming them would cause these intelligent, solitary animals unnecessary suffering and will lead to the disruption of ecosystems. We should move away from factory farming animals, NOT finding new species to confined into a life of misery. If the US can do it, the EU should do! Animal Legal Defense Fund Animal Rights Initiative

Aquatic Life Institute, alongside the Center for Biological Diversity, World Animal Protection, Global Forest Coalition, and Brighter Green, co-authored The Just Transition white paper, with contributions from over 50 global organizations. We call for a phaseout of industrial animal agriculture, industrial fishing and aquaculture, through a just transition to an equitable, humane, and sustainable food system, prioritizing plant-based foods to protect animals, the climate, workers, and food security. Industrial animal production—including fishing and aquaculture—focuses on mass-producing low-quality seafood, meat, dairy, and eggs, prioritizing corporate profits over the well-being of workers, local communities, animals, and the environment. Without addressing the impacts of industrial fishing and aquaculture, a sustainable future for our oceans and planet is out of reach. #JustFoodTransition https://lnkd.in/ezbb9riw
