A new exhibit of Spanish-American art at the St. Louis Art Museum showcases growing faith in Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and more throughout the colonial period of 1500-1800. A silver gilt chalice and altar cross, dating to the late 1500s in Mexico and Guatemala, showcase the master silverwork already present in the region. The chalice also incorporated rock crystal, wood carving and feathers — understood by some Indigenous groups to be sacred objects — in a new Christian context. “We tend to still live with this idea that everything changed with the Spanish, and many things did change. But there were a lot of long-established artistic traditions that were there when the Spanish arrived,” said Judith Mann, one of four St. Louis Art Museum organizing curators for the exhibit. The National Eucharistic Pilgrimage completed its time in the Archdiocese of St. Louis with a 5.5 mile procession from the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis to St. Stephen Protomartyr on Sunday afternoon. Despite the high temperatures, scores of people walked with Jesus in the Eucharist on the side of major roads including Tower Grove Avenue and Morgan Ford Road and through the middle of Tower Grove Park. Read the St. Louis Review's coverage of the three days of pilgrimages at stlouisreview.com.

Carla and Eric Struckhoff have been part of youth ministry in St. Louis since its early days, taking teens to St. John Paul II's youth rally in 1999 as a newly married couple. Today, their children are youth ministry leaders and teens, continuing the work of intentional evangelization to young people. Youth ministry “helped lay the early foundations in our marriage, of putting faith first and looking outside yourself and doing ministry,” Eric said. “And through all the positive experiences we’ve had in encounters with the Lord and seeing transformations happen with the youth we’ve worked with, (we’re) seeing that within our own family now as they go through youth ministry and have that faith community.” Read more in the June/July issue of Catholic St. Louis magazine. Caring Hearts Pregnancy Resource Center, the only pregnancy resource center in Washington County, has formed new relationships with the archdiocesan Respect Life Apostolate, Annual Catholic Appeal, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis and more. When Caring Hearts was established 10 years ago, it focused on helping younger, first-time moms or those who were abortion-minded, executive director Mande Robinson said. Over time, the team learned that wanting to keep the child was often not the biggest obstacle; it was any number of other circumstances and hardships facing parents both during pregnancy and as their children grew. Now, Caring Hearts serves not just pregnant women but offers a wide range of resources to parents and grandparents. When Bonnie Gardner gained custody of her granddaughter at just two days old, Caring Hearts helped set her up with a car seat and other baby supplies, and Gardner started attending regular parenting classes to update her knowledge of current best practices. “They’re there when you need them. If I call and say, ‘Hey, I need help with this, I need to talk about this,’ they’re there,” Gardner said. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gVFphu7c
