Art on theMART is the largest permanent art projection in the world, projecting artwork onto the façade of theMART.
About us
ART on THE MART is the largest permanent digital art projection in the world, projecting contemporary artwork across the 2.5 acre river-façade of theMART. ART on THE MART is an iconic milestone on Chicago’s visionary trajectory of public art. In September 2018, theMART introduced Art on theMART to the world with a launch event that attracted over 32,000 people to the Riverwalk and Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago, transforming its urban context. Since the launch, ART on THE MART has provided a public platform for moving image work by renowned local, national and international multi-disciplinary artists. The program is the result of a 30-year commitment by theMART owner Vornado Realty Trust, in close collaboration with the City of Chicago, with the shared goal to provide public access to innovative contemporary artwork for the thousands of visitors traversing the Chicago Riverwalk each day. The program content rotates seasonally and is selected with the assistance and expertise of the Curatorial Advisory Board. The City of Chicago and theMART work in partnership to manage and curate the project artwork. ART on THE MART marks the first time a projection of its size and scope is completely dedicated to digital art with no branding, sponsorship credits or messaging. The permanent projection system illuminates theMART with 34 state-of-the-art projectors totaling almost one million lumens. THE MART (formerly The Merchandise Mart), located in the center of the sought-after River North submarket, is interwoven into the fabric of Chicago as an innovator in business, technology, culture, art, media and more.

📚 How should public digital art evolve with cities? Executive Director Cynthia Noble's essay in Fast Company published today entitled "Evolving cities, evolving façades: public digital art can make our cities better" expands on the question. "When planning and placing public artwork in a shared space, the key is to envision all possible outcomes of how viewers will experience the art and how those outcomes contribute to or detract from the social goods we want in our future cities." Cynthia notes. Read more from Fast Company here: https://bit.ly/3XpNwpI

🏆 Congratulations to #ARTonTHEMART alum Yuge Zhao on winning the 2024 The Joyce Foundation Artadia Award! Each year, the Artadia Award benefits three artists in seven major US cities. The program identifies culturally underrepresented artists through a committee of curators as jurors, and annually supports at least 22 visual artists with unrestricted funds. Yuge's 2022 #ARTonTHEMART projection 'Love Letters' depicted a lively courtship dance between two urban dwellers searching for each other through a labyrinth of colorful geometrics.
