Scientists continue to publish new images of faraway galaxies and stars captured by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), including a composite image released by NASA last week of the Cartwheel galaxy that was taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera and the Mid-Infrared Instrument. ATA Engineering (ATA) Director of Flight Programs, Mr. Kurt Knutson, recently spoke with FOX 5 San Diego (KSWB-TV) about the important analysis and test services provided by ATA, which helped make possible these unprecedented high-quality images of distant galaxies. In particular, ATA performed detailed structural analysis and finite element modeling for the MIRI focal plane module, the Primary Mirror Backplane Support Structure (PMBSS), and the Secondary Mirror Mount (SMM). ATA also conducted tests of the JWST structure, including modal testing of the Optical Telescope Unit and the Spacecraft Element. ATA’s engineering contributions to the JWST program included more than 38 person-years of engineering support to our partners at NASA/JPL and Northrop Grumman (including the former ATK) from 2004–2018. JWST represents a significant telescope advancement in size, scale, and technology. Positioned one million miles from Earth at L2, it has very large and stable optics. Webb’s instruments are able to capture infrared light wavelengths revealing never-before-seen details of the universe and objects that are older and farther away. The journey to Europa has officially begun! Congratulations to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration on the successful launch of the Europa Clipper. Its mission: to explore Jupiter’s moon and uncover the unknown environment hidden beneath its icy surface. ATA Engineering is proud to have contributed to this groundbreaking mission, particularly through our work on Europa Clipper’s only instrument capable of looking directly into Europa’s icy shell — the Radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding: Ocean to Near-surface, or REASON. ATA supported the thermal vacuum chamber (TVAC) test of REASON’s antennas, performed correlation and flight verification and validation analysis, and presented a paper related to the successful correlation at the recent NASA Thermal & Fluids Analysis Workshop. ATA also supported finite element modeling for jitter analysis of the Europa Imaging System Narrow-Angle Camera and Mapping Imaging Spectrometer instruments. In addition, ATA assisted NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) with strain gage installation for the Dynamic Test Model and with modal testing of the Europa Clipper.
