"Sharktober" is on! Footage of Greg Skomal working with AWSC in the surf on Chatham Bar this month. The team got some excellent video of this 12 foot shark in clear water despite challenging sea conditions. The ID team is now processing the images to determine who the shark is. Never a dull moment out there in "Sharktober"!

Yesterday, a necropsy was conducted on the white shark that washed up on Nauset Beach yesterday. Led by Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries scientist Dr. Greg Skomal, measurements and samples were taken of the shark to learn more about its internal and external anatomy and cause of death. Here is what we know: -This shark was a previously identified individual, Koala, identified in 2022. -Koala's total length was just over 12ft and he was a mature, male, white shark. -There are no obvious signs of how or why Koala died. Further testing will have to be done to find a cause of death. -As it is incredibly sad that a white shark has died, samples of organs, tissues, vertebrate sections, and more are used to further the knowledge of this species.
