According to fDi Markets data, a record $11.45bn was pledged to US battery energy storage projects in the first half of 2024, with California and Texas attracting the lion's share of investment. These projects represent a key part of the world's transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources like wind and solar. To follow up on the fDi Markets trend, I spoke directly with Oliver Kerr from Aurora Energy Research, who says "Texas has all the right fundamentals in place for batteries," with the state having "hardly any solar a few years ago to being arguably the leading state for solar build out right now." The US role in the energy transition reflects a combination of policy incentives, power demand, investment liquidity, and technology shifts. The US receives its fair share of new investment in clean energy (about 16% of the world total last year), but China and Europe are investing more using different tools and policies. How do the Inflation Reduction Act's tax credits, industrial policy, and trade policy together shape energy investment, create jobs, boost economic output, and curtail greenhouse gas emissions?
